How do I get BOLD, underscore, italics etc, on a post?

I can't figure out how to apply the above, actually anything text related, to a post or reply.

Also, the horizontal bar of smilies doesn't appear to do anything (the smilies link does tho') what's it for?

Help an old timer work this out please.

When posting or replying - there's a link just above the box where you type entitled formatting help - it's all in there.

For bold, for example, you need to start off with a "b" enclosed in square brackets [] and when you get to the end, /b in the brackets.

The horizontal bar of smilies, puts one next to the title - or beside your post. To get embedded smilies you need to use the pop-up list (or remember the codes).

If you click on "Formatting help", it'll give you a list of codes to embed in your text to do things like bold, italic etc.

Reminds me of first being introduced to 'puters a lo-ooong time ago; formatting floppys etc...

Excuse the doddery-ness, but is there not just a way to 'highlight' the text you want to do something with, and then select an option?
