Is it not possible to have a way of showing who is online at any given time, such as a little icon next to the persons name in there profile.

Then, would it also be possible to 'talk' directly to any given person, subject to there approval, via a pop-up window (like msn messenger). This way you could post on the site & also be talking to someone in a seperate window.

I only ask because there is a lot of occurances when certain things cannot be put on the site, and the only way is by email, which is a) a bit slow & b) only sent to your registered email address, which you're not always at.

Ted ?

If you add the person that you want to check their status to the your 'mates' list, PH already does this.

...unless they've chosen to hide their on/offline status.

True enough, but in essence it does already do that...

But you cannot 'talk' to them can you ? Only through email.

Would it not be possible to set up a link to your 'friend' in real-time (like messenger) ?

Have a look at www.myspace.com they have a good arrangement.

I like the idea. It could prove useful. I shall research it...

This sounds excellent. Hope there's a way to achieve it. Just one point though.

I've noticed that people who are on line don't always indicate this in the 'mates' view. Possibly drop off the list if they are just browsing and haven't posted recently. If true then this may also happen with an 'member on line' icon.

Shouldn't be anything to do with when they've posted - I'll look into that.

The way it works on myspace.com, is that you set up your profile to:

a) allow messages from anyone
b) allow messages from just your 'friends'
c) don't allow any messages

Each person has an 'instant messgae' link in thier profile. So if you want to speak to them in real time you simply click on this & if they are allowing messages it will set up a connection which the recieving person has to accept first. Assuming they do accept, it just works like messenger.

Several different formats (PHP, etc) feature such "private messages". It works pretty much like the usual mail software with of course many less functions.

Are we talking real-time chat on a one-to-one basis or just messages?

Sounds like a good idea. I talk to quite a few PHers over MSN but being able to talk straight away via PH would make things a lot easier!

Real-time chat

Oh I see. I wasn't too sure if you were interested in in-site messages too, that's why I mentioned those.

PS : Hi Ted, how is it going ?

Basically I'm working on a ground up rebuild of the forums currently. It's probably a few weeks away from going live.

Although it will look largely the same the underlying structure will be a lot easier to manage so I'll be able to consider changes like this more easily. So once that's in place I'll revisit a lot of the suggestions made over the last few months.

Sorry to dredge up such an old thread but the original question, 'Is it possible to show who is online?', was a good idea in my view. A colour change to the names in the 'Author' column for example.

It could be useful to know whether someone you're engaging with is actually still online.

Yep, that's something I'll be able to consider.
