Impossible to follow which way a thread's pages run...!!

Which way round do the pages work???
Every other forum, the first page is the earliest, but here, no matter how I approach a thread I just cannot fathom out what's going on!!
The section tells me there are new posts since I last logged on, but can I find them most times? NO!!!
For that reason, I tend to visit other forums.
Confused....
