Oh, and proper code formatting that works with more than a single chunk of code would be good too.
ETA: phpBB and various other open source forums have had a similar editing screen for 15+ years...
So yes PH is beyond obsolete in this respect, and it also lacks stability.

Agree on sigs and avatars.
But entering markup code for bold/italics/etc isn't even vaguely user friendly.
Doesn't have to be a full blown word processor but a few easy UI improvements for text entry...
