Recently a new female member posted asking for suggestions for a car-related present for her boyfriend's Honda Integra.

A lovely idea - who wouldn't want a partner as thoughtful as that?

The first half dozen posts were all off colour suggestions - blow jobs etc.

I can't quote them now, as a mod has been in and cleaned them out, but really - do the PH members not want women on this site?

I would definitely not recommend PH to any of my female friends - there are plenty of interesting and thoughtful posters on here, but the locker room brigade makes it a very unfriendly place for females.

I expect the usual "can't take a joke" comments, but it was a seriously off-colour "welcome" IMO.

I saw the thread and cringed a bit at the replies.

Unfortunately an increasing number of threads seem to derail/turn into slanging matches, which is one of the reasons why I tend to stay away from certain areas of the site.

It would be good to see harder/more consistent modding of the site as a whole.

I realise that this is carried out by volunteers and I do appreciate PH on the whole - I've made great friends by attending Sunday Services and met up with some real enthusiasts at regional meets - but I sometimes read threads and wonder why some people don't get banned (either temporarily or permanent) more quickly.

How about a bit more self moderation from the forum community?

There's nothing to stop some of the more senior/sensible members stepping in to threads like that referenced and making it clear the type of content that they feel is not appropriate.

Enough of this type of action and (hopefully) the miscreants will start to get the message.

Won't work.

This place has gone downhill in terms of general ahole-ishness and "I've been here four score and twenty years and I'm sensible so you will listen to me" will just descent into arguing.

Tbh if people want to be prats in the way they were on the thread in question I think just ban a few until the message gets across.

Half the problem is that the bulk of the questionable comments come from the "more senior" members.
Seniority on a forum doesn't equal authority, and who's to say who is sensible?

The obvious solution is visible and present moderation.

I think it will work, stinkotanko and daytona355 have been much quieter recently. Stinko even complained that we were being nasty to him hehe so it does have an effect.

It should work, provided the mods back up those who are trying to be more sensible. We need the confidence that telling a prick that he's being a prick won't end up being undermined by a mod.

What surprises me is that the people such lewd remarks clearly think they're being witty or clever, when in reality they are knuckle-scraping neanderthals.

And yet it's the young such as myself who get abuse and get told how 'immature' and 'inexperienced in life' we are. If lack of life experience means being able to speak to women without making lewd suggestions, then I'll stay that way thanks.

Mine was the 4th or 5th post in that thread expressing surprise at the schoolboy nonsense going up in response to a completely legitimate enquiry.

There were at least some decent answers coming in by the time I bailed out, I hope the thread did turn out helpful to her.

Ironic that in a thread bemoaning bullies, they come out to say how proud they are of their bullying!

Be under no illusion though, your online bullying has no effect on me.

I heard it gives you a massive erection. I may have misread it though and you could be a massive erection.

This thread is becoming ironic already...

laugh

I agree though OP, some of the responses were properly cringey. However, whilst it's no excuse for lewd and inappropriate behaviour, it is inevitable where you have a group of men communicating. PH has, in some areas at least, become almost a virtual pub from the 60s.

There is a difference between a bit of light hearted banter made in a nice way, and smutty lewd comments.

Any reasonable person can see that.
