Why are some letters bunched up?

I've noticed recently that some word combinations with "wa" in have the letters bunched up and looks retarded. Why is this happening?

Look at the locked topic down the list "where can I get an unusual watch battery" - the "wa" in watch are bunched up.

Also in this thread - 3rd line from bottom in OP "was envious bollix".

Win 8.1 + Chrome desktop browser. Standard skin that the site has had for years (not the latest one). Oddly the letters aren't bunched up on my XP lappy running Chrome desktop.

ETA: I do run Adblock but just to rule it out I paused it and refreshed the page(s). The letters are now back to normal spacing so looks like Adblock is the cause for whatever reason, albeit fine on XP running same.
