I was informed yesterday that I have been banned from the NP&E forum for 90 days. The circumstances are that a poster with a history of stalking me around this site and making personal attacks made a crass joke about a dead friend of mine and I responded by calling him a anglo-saxon four-letter word. I have always been of the view that it's your place and your rules, so I'm not asking for a lifting of the ban, but I do feel rather aggrieved and would like to raise a few points.

• My response may have broken the forum rules, however the goading was severe and I made no attempt to bypass the swear filter.

• I recieved no warning at all, just an email telling me I was banned.

• I have been posting on here for almost a decade and have never, up until now, recieved so much as a thread ban. So the 90 days for responding to a vile post with a bit of swearing seems rather extreme.

I would welcome your views.

I could understand this, if the post about your friend had also been removed completely, but it's still present in the thread. I had 2 posts quoting it removed, but 11 other posts containing it are still on that thread.
I can only hope the poster of that comment was also banned for a similar length of time.

I mailed the mod who commented on the thread to ask why they're still there, but haven't had any response at all.

In previous thread I brought up that the victim can be the one thats banned rather than the perpetrator and their mates.

Got it this time.

So I guess that those posts are acceptable as they're still there.

I'm not the usual mod in NP&E, I wasn't really looking at overall content only acting on received reports that weren't to do with content.

Would you mind if I ask if you're the mod who banned me? Because if you 'weren't really looking at the overall content' you may have missed the part where he asked if my dead friend had lost his life due to a car bombing or suicide vest?

Strange - I specifically reported one of the Tom Logan posts because of it's offensive content.

Can I suggest that more meaningful feedback is given when a post is moderated? I received a notification ' Quoted posts removed.' but no idea what or
which posts it was referring to.

I think you'll find that the mail you should have received, outlined the reason as to why your post was removed and another would have explained why your removal from the forum was implemented.

Sorry, is that directed at me? If it is then I actually got the notification of the removal(s) after I was banned. The reasons for removal were vague: one said 'not a comment we want on the thread' - I assume this refers to the use of a swear word, but it's ambiguous at best. The other said 'Unnecessary and unwanted comment - not what we want on the website.' This one also contained a warning about being binned, but as I had already been binned by then it was rather pointless.

The thing is, neither of these says anything about swearing, and I can't help thinking that the reference to 'comments' would have been better aimed at the poster who thinks the death of someone's friend is funny. Are you sure you haven't mixed us up?

my ban email (which came first) said I was banned for name calling and unnaceptable behaviour towards other forum members. Well, I hate to be pedantic, but it was just the one forum member and I rather think he asked for it.

The order of mails is down to the way we have to press respective buttons if we press them out of sequence we hit obstacles in the system.

I think the mails were succinct and to the point, if this had been a one off incident then I could understand your reasoning, however I think you doth protest too much!

As I said at the top of the thread, I accept the decisions made by the people who own and run this site. But maybe I'll leave you with an open question about how you might react to someone making a snide, disrespectful and bigotted comment around the death of a close friend of yours?

I am fully aware that I engage in some robust debate, but in this particular case I make no apologies. I also hope that I'm not alone in being banned...

As I've already explained I didn't read all the content of thread, and was only acting on reports that came in, those weren't to do with content. Your ban from the thread was in relation to those reports. The whole thread has now been removed for appraisal, see sticky post in NP&E forum.
Your forum ban was for your posting style not only on that forum but generally. As mods we have the ability the ban members from threads, forums or the site, on this particular occasion the forum ban was selected by way of a warning.

On reflection, my post re ttwiggy's late friend was OTT for which I apologise.

Big Al - I personally thought the thread in question was far better than most involving a certain subject. It was only the comments yesterday and today involving Twiggy's friend which dragged it way off course and prompted reactions from quite a few posters.

Sorry - can you qualify this? I argue like a tt on NP&E I fully accept, but on every other forum I visit I am polite and helpful wherever possible.

Sorry, but I'm not going into specifics, certain members come up on the mods radar usually triggered by the number of reports received from other members over a period of time, on this occasion your forum ban is only confined to NP&E, you can post in other other forum just not NP&E.

I realise I'm going to get nowhere with this but if I'm apparently walking a fine line from being thrown off the site altogether I think it's only fair if I know why. My 'general posting style' isn't really very helpful as a guide. As I said, I've never had nasty spats with anyone on GG, the lounge, Boats planes and trains or even SP&L (these are the forums I frequent or used to frequent). These 'reports' - any chance they're coming from a small number of posters? smile

Twiggy If you are having "nasty spats" with anyone on any internet forum you probably need to take a look at what / how you post. The thing with the internet is that its the easiest place to "be the bigger man" and ignore stupid and/or ignorant comments!
