Why is there such inconsistency in moderation?

The reason I ask is that a short while ago someone who asked where he could sell motoring magazines had his posts removed:
Rule 12 g. "Where to Advertise/Sell threads are not allowed."

Whereas there's currently a week-long thread in 'Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes' in which the OP directly asks 'what's it worth' about a 1969 French Mini.
Rule 12b. "Valuation/What's it worth threads in any shape or form, regardless of item."

Whilst Rule 2. "No amateur sleuthing for whatever reason " never seems to be enforced.

It all seems a bit illogical to me.

I'm sure I've had a post removed for that reason before now.

Firstly the moderation team can only act on threads/posts that are reported to them - don't assume they see every post on the forum. Have you reported this thread to them?

Secondly I'd suggest there is a different between a poster asking for a valuation or advertising for their own items (or at least items which they will benefit from the sale of) verses asking about the valuation of something they have seen or come across.

It's not as if it's a concealed thread, its title is "1969 French Mini value".

The rules make no differentiation.

The thought that mods constantly scan for dodgy threads / posts seems bizarre, yet they do seem to pick some things up remarkably quickly.

Does much stuff get reported? Seems an odd thing to do, unless it's a personal attack.

I occasionally report posts that

1. Fall short of meeting terms and conditions
2. Don't comply with posting rules
3. Are "new" threads where we have existing threads running
4. Have been posted by Citizensmith as he is my arch nemesis (See note).

Clearly the Mods can't read every post on this forum so unless users "raise" the issues many would go undetected - sometimes threads I start are an attempt to "highlight" issues rather than report individual posts but that's really NP&E territory.

Note * - Point 4 is definitely a joke - I'd like to report all his posts for poor spelling, punctuation or grammar but none of that is against the rules so I just take the piss a bit........

Points taken but none really address the issue of inconsistent moderation frown

Not really sure what you mean by Wow & Again

You think users shouldn’t report posts that don’t comply?

I’m very sure that I’m not alone in doing this.......

As fot starting threads about issues well we have a whole section called website feedback don’t we?

I would just like to say the moderation this afternoon has been top notch with 2 "unsuitable" threads being removed PDQ.

99.9% of users will just close the thread and go about their day i'd imagine.

There was always a child in school who ran to the teacher to tell tales, he was often a loner with poor hygiene and social skills.

Then at work there is always someone with these same traits running off to management to let them know of any mistermeaners that maybe going on, they too have no friends and are basically ignored.

You are the pistonheads equivalent of the above, you're ignored in the real world so to get heard on a website is a good substitute for you, and if a complete stranger in authority acts on your request you have been heard and your gripe acted upon, win, win.
There were always some people who behaved like tits. When being called out for acting like a tit they're only response was "ooh you telltale!"

Wouldn't life be so much better if people didn't act like tits?

Thanks for the compliments - really appreciated - clearly your comprehension skills have let you down a little so flipping it round

There was always the child at school who could see bullying going on but didn't tell anyone - not parents or teachers - they only spoke up after the child being bullied took their own life - are you that child biggrin

On a serious note - you seriously expect the limited numbers of moderators to read every thread - you are quite mad if you think they can

I guess you would like General Gassing to be full of

Current news discussion - because it would be if not for the actions of PH'rs alerting moderators to threads that aren't car related that need to be moved to other specific discussion areas.

or maybe

Spam posts for Viagra or kitchens

or

lets have no classifieds at all just Cars for sale posts

This is not telling tales this is supporting moderation on the forum and keeping things manageable - you twist it in what ever way you like but the report functionality can take many forms.

The option to report a post gives the following catagories

For Your Information
Not Safe For Work
Offensive Content
Unauthorised Advertising
Naming and Shaming
Other

I wouldn't mind an input on if this activity is appreciated by the moderators and admin because I know I'm not alone in supporting the forum in this way so I will report this post to ask for a response. If that is also considered by you as telling tales then you are a very strange fellow indeed

Do you like visiting this forum? I do it provides me with a lot of internet entertainment and education

See my reply to Inigma and think about what this place would be with no user support (in terms of reporting issues) to the moderator group

Then I'd like your considered response please biggrin
