Consistency in Moderation?
Discussion
I don't have access to my PH registered email so I may have an answer already sent to me however.
Please Mods can we have some consistency of moderation in the Brexit threads.???
...I have no problem with being banned due to agreeing with a post calling one of the most prolific Trolls on this site a Quisling...IMO he is.....however the very same Troll dragged out a 2yr old post made by a.n.other.....replied to it as if it was recent and used it to make another of his many attempts to cast all leave voters as Racists...........although he quickly deleted it again it is only one of many such "baiting" posts that he, and a few others, make on a regular basis.
I don't know who chris.moderator is but all I ask that you, and other mods, treat everyone the same in future..many thanks and a H.N.Y. to you all.

I didn't see the incident you are writing about or have any idea of the thread or old post involved. I remember seeing your post and to which troll it refers. Troll is the correct term for that poster.
Let's be clear there is a certain faction on here, not just Brexit threads btw, who see other posters opposed to their view, who then post deliberately inflammatory content, baiting posts as you say, in the hope that one of the opposition bites, goes over the top, then the troll complains and one less opposition. Seen it time and again, and have had PMs warning me of individuals spotted using this tactic, at which point I then disengage from any further communication.
I tend to agree on the apparent lack of consistency, though a significant factor is individual bias and thus different perception.
Nevertheless moderation is thankless task, herding cats would be easier, but the number of sock puppet accounts, together with returning bannees is indeed tiresome.
On the question of bans, personally in two minds, at least once you've sussed out a poster is not worth the effort it's easy to ignore, yet all the others responding to the baits fills up the pages with angry dross. A ban means you have to figure out the new persons from scratch. Some are stupid and just weigh in on the old threads and restart the old arguments so they stick out like a sore thumb, even if it's not possible to work out exactly who they were. Some are more subtle and adopt a wholly different persona and legend, couple of them operating in N,P&E right now. Very quickly spotted and on ignore list, so not that subtle.
Said in two minds about bans, there are some who wouldn't last 24 hours if I had the ban button. At least an acknowledgement of uncertainty, which reinforces there isn't an easy answer. Even so, compared to some places PH at its worst is still ultimately civilised

I have to say there is no consistency and especially with regards to brexit. Some months back someone posted about returning a broken hoover or something.
On reflection it was Just a fake story to criticise brexit and start an argument. They went in to say all the current return rights (1/2 year guarantee) would now be lost and no one would ever be able to return anything.
I questioned what info they had that meant they thought the government would be scrapping that particular rule. Or if they were just a f@@k wit trying to wind people up. That resulted in me receiving a 3 month ban without any warning.
Now compared to a lot of what I see on here I think that was pretty tame. Now with my tin foil hat on I wonder if hay market (mr heseltine) have a policy towards no anti project fear comments.
And for the record I’m not even pro brexit.

I haven't seen that incident, but what you've described doesn't sound all that inconsistent to me.
Mods everywhere tend to crack down on personal attacks. That might be calling someone names or criticising them for who they are not what they are saying. As soon as we stop talking about the subject of the argument and start having a pop at each other, the mods get interested. Saying "you are a quisling" is one good way to get a mod's attention. It's you vs him - a personal attack.
But mods tend to be more lenient if posters are provocative but stay on topic and don't get into personal attacks. They might let you get away with a depersonalised statement like "All leavers/ remainers are XXX" or "Some leavers/ remainers are XXX"
Trolls exploit this by trying to stay just inside the line. They piss people off so that others get banned instead of them. The best way to deal with trolls is either to ignore them or stay just inside the line yourself.

Fair point and I have learnt my lesson. I now only respond to comments that are light hearted or actually people having a discussion. And locked any insults away.Mods everywhere tend to crack down on personal attacks. That might be calling someone names or criticising them for who they are not what they are saying. I accept being a mod is a thankless task....but if you are going to volunteer to do it (and I have elsewhere previously) then it has to be with as much impartiality as possible..I know the returning banees, duplicate accounts are not easy to deal with but the prolific, baiting Trolls stick out like a sore thumb IMO and have ruined a large section of this site.
As stated I accept my medicine, and admit to limiting my sensible posts nowadays, but find it rather ironic I, and presumably the other poster, got banned for calling out and insulting a Troll that plays the "R" card at each and every opportunity whether relevant or not...

Remember that the moderation team do not necessarily spend any length of time in a particular thread or forum, and so may not see the "obvious" patterns of posting that you see. A very small proportion of the posts in the forums are seen by the moderation team as a matter of course. They often have to deal with incidents in isolation when they are reported. Some reminders to help improve the moderation of the forums:
- If you see posting activity that is against the rules then use the "Report" link to alert the moderation team so they can investigate and take action as required. Don't assume that they will have seen the problem automatically.
- If you identify a returning banee then again use the "Report" button and explain why you think this is the case (and who you think the returnee was previously). The moderation team can then investigate fully. Don't assume that the moderation team have seen the current and previous style of posting of the returnee that makes it "obvious" to frequent contributors to a thread/forum.

There’s irony Jeremy, your reminders are really a little tragic, no offence. Some reminders to help improve the moderation of the forums:

I’ve been told via email that two very vocal trolls have been reported multiple times on the same subject, yet still post, the reporters in the meantime have been banned from the subject in order to prevent further reporting of posts.
Let’s be serious fella, trolling increases site traffic. The trouble on here is the mods are doing a dreadful job of trying to make it look like trolling is dealt with, whilst allowing it, it’s obvious it’s become so obvious it’s almost comedic. It’s so ridiculous that they even turn up to bait on this part of the forum when someone questions a ban, and no, I won’t point it out as a I might get another ban for callling out one of them. That’s how it appears to work....
One can only hope that new ownership changes this.
I’ve been contacted by email away from the site by eight posters, it seems that the site will soon come under national media scrutiny regarding trolling, bullying and mental health issues.
In the meantime, nothing will change, the trolls will continue. I’d suggest anyone unhappy reports and reports, maybe Jeremy and the other mods might do something, maybe they will also realise that posters on here actually do communicate away from the site.
Maybe things might change, but for the sake of revenue, I very much doubt it.
Chin up Alfie, you just have to laugh at the comedy of it all, sometimes this place is a shambles of an embarrassment, other times it isnt, like when the remain multiple accounts/trolls are asleep.......oooopps, that’s me banned again

I think some of you need to consider what "trolling" is. Simply having an opinion that is different from yours isn't trolling.
