Hopefully this comes across in the non-aggressive tone it's intended, but what's the score with this?

I just opened up a Readers Car thread to find the moderators had edited out the authors link to his own YouTube channel, a post made to support thread and to enhance the content.

I've got a Youtube link in my readers car thread, and it's been left untouched.

Is there a rule (new or old?) that I should be aware about, and is there any guidance on why one link is allowed and another is not?

Cheers!

I would suggest that the posts with links breach the rule of posting No.12e

Posting Rules said:

e. Do not create threads/posts about your own personal websites, blogs, social media channels or video hosting sites such as YouTube. This will be deemed as advertising and/or endeavouring to drive traffic to external sites from PistonHeads.

Thank you, I would agree that of all the rules that one seems the most likely. But this seems a to stretch that rule a little bit, the guy had 16 subscribers and clearly is not a "commercial youtuber" and just wanted some video support for his thread. Seems not much different than hosting images on a third party repository and linking to that!

Perhaps this was automated, I get no personal gain from my YT channel nor do I suspect does the poster in question but I appreciate that's hard to recognise for any type of automated moderation.

It's there really to clamp down on new members just signing up to plug their clips, the odd one or to from established members would probably be overlooked if not reported. smile

Can nobody exercise some common sense and see that this isn't some supercar chasing kid trying to get subscribers? This is the sort of thread that used to make PH an interesting place to come to. Still happy to advertise cars from companies that have been proven to rip off buyers though.

When running large message boards it's much easier to have a blanket ban on something, and be as consistent as possible.

If they allow self promotion for a small channel, someone with a slightly larger channel will try it on, and eventually it'll escalate and cause lots of arguments and toxic behaviour.

It also stops people signing up just to spam their channel, because they know it's a waste of time.

There is a thread for posting Youtube videos in the Lounge. Not the greatest compromise but better than nothing.

Big Al has already said it might be overlooked for old timers so not really a level playing field. I understand the sentiment but easy enough for a mod to take a look at the thread and say "nah looks ok". Youtube thread is useless, everything is just lumped together - not in a thread dedicated to discuss cheap 911s.

Just seems a far cry from the original ethos of the site. Mods do a standup job most of the time but this is madness IMHO.

I guess given the excellent video hosting functionality of this site that is fair enough and youtube is indeed a competitor....
