I think your proposal has some merit. Another example of where it might make sense to look at the forum structure is having Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda all lumped together.
Going down this route opens a whole range of possible changes such as the Mercedes section becoming (for example) ‘Mercedes general’ ‘AMG’ and ‘Mercedes classics’. Is this subdivision and hence having some very quiet sections something we want?

Yep, but if you are into, for example, Focus Rs and you land on a general forum full of C-Max, Mondeo, Seirra threads you'll go elsewhere. Its a little bit of chicken and egg of course.
But there are some like the VW and French ones that surely could be split out into , at the very least their own brands.
