User names messing up quote formatting

If a username contains non-alphabetic or mumeric characters such as &, / etc it screws up the quote formatting & there's no clue to the poster why things have gone wrong when replying.
Can you either strip out these characters out of the names or ban the users so the rest of us don't have to waste time messing around trying to work out why quotes aren't working properly.
