In the new May update to PH rules
https://www.pistonheads.com/rules-of-posting
Rule 16 Do not copy and paste content from newspapers, news sites or other websites. This is a breach of their copyright and any such threads will be deleted.
It used to say click and pasting without supplying links to the original was against the rules but now ANY copy and pasting is against the rules?
Is that right? Half the NPandE is click and paste from articles.

Are we allowed to quote people if we put the persons name, the quote in quotes i.e. Ben said "Good find! Hopefully that ASAP will be a bit sooner now "
As an example, the Porsche Nurgbergring record article the author used passages and quotes directly from the Porsche press release
It's a bit of a can of worms that has been opened that needs clarifying

As it stands no, because that goes against our current rules of posting. But I will clarify as soon as I can.
In which case - you can see how silly this is, because as an example your contributors article/post on the GT2 claims lap record contains quotes directly from the Porsche press release... https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-germancars/por...
https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2021/products/pors...
Which lets be honest was also quoted by Top Gear: https://www.topgear.com/car-news/supercars/porsche...
Autoexpress: https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/porsche/911/355341/p...
Yahoo: https://www.yahoo.com/now/watch-porsche-911-gt2-rs...
CarBuzz: https://carbuzz.com/news/manthey-porsche-911-gt2-r...
and many many others...
So this really does need clarifying as does the ruling on if this is ban worthy or not. Rule 16 says it will be removed, nothing about a ban.
Your guidance in NP&E says the same, https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
with the caveat of
"Firstly, we’d like to remind you of our rules of posting before you join any discussions – if you break these rules your comment will be deleted, and you may be suspended or banned from the forums."
I understand the need to stop people posting in whole news stories etc, but I hope we will be able to quote people, paste the summary provided it's attributed/link given.
Thanks

Don't confuse content from press/media releases with content written for newspapers, magazines, blogs etc.https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-germancars/por...

The PR content will often come with guidelines for the media on how it can be used and by whom - usually that the text can be quoted directly (let's face it that is the primary purpose of much of these releases - to get the content into the media). Copyrighted content from other media sources is protected and by default shouldn't be copied.

Probably quicker and easier to give the mod who banned byker a good beating for opening this can of worms ![hehe](/inc/images/hehe.gif)
Nope, lets get it sorted once and for all with some clear clarification. If it's nothing at all with a complete ban with a sin bin or ban for doing so then thats the rules and we have to apply by them, but rule 16 said nothing about banning nor sin binning, yet Big Al said he would have banned me as well.![hehe](/inc/images/hehe.gif)
At the moment we have a complete ban on even quoting a person, or a part of an article to emphasise details or a point, even if properly linked and attributed, thus promoting opinions, falsehoods and at times downright lies.

You're confusing copyright laws with forum rules. Moderators are meant to interpret the forum rules as written, not be fully qualified IP lawyers. Press releases, etc. are still copyrighted content.

Robinessex posts copy/paste chunks from the BBC website pretty much every day in the climate change politics thread. Has done for the last couple of years. Sometimes more than one per day.
I think it’s safe to say that you can get away with totally ignoring this ‘rule’.
Why are you naming and shaming an individual PH member to the attention of "the mods"? Why did you not choose one of your "mates" on the climate change science thread (note I didn't name an individual) that does similar? I think it’s safe to say that you can get away with totally ignoring this ‘rule’.
PS. Do you think the BBC gives a damn about copy and pasting and linking to their news reports? I think you'll find they love it!!

So, going forward, when someone does use a quote in a post what will happen?
Either,
In the event that nobody notices and/or reports the quote then nothing happens…? [I am guessing this will be the case for the vast majority of cases]
or,
If the quote is reported then the Mods, satisfied that the poster has broken rule 16, remove the quote(d material) and/or the whole of the posters’ post.
Assuming nobody is banned, the poster tries again to make a point without infringing rule 16.
What's the problem?
