Text formatting in comments

How come text formatting is sometimes ignored in comments?

Just done a reply post and tried to bold a couple of comments, first worked ok, second just reproduced the tags in the text.

Both identical tags, and no other formatting in between to mess it up

It seems to break if there's a page break in between the tags that forces the text onto a new line, but it seems to work fine if it's just a long text string that simply overruns onto a new line. If you're formatting text with page breaks, then you need to open and close the tags for each line.
