Hey Admin folks!

Would it be possible to have a Sim Racing sub forum within motorsport? It’s grown hugely through 2020 and there’s loads to chat about from software and hardware to tips and race series to join.

Good idea Nick. We would typically set up a new forum if there's enough demand for it, although I'm not finding many threads relating to it so might be a bit hard to justify right now.

Wouldn't any new forum be better placed in the pie & piston next to the video games and computers & gadgets subforums?

Walks off nonchalantly leaving opened can of worms...

It’s a fair comment. It’s a bit in a no mans land between gaming and real motorsport. It’s been interesting watching a lot of my mates who race cars get really into during 2020 and spending £1,000s on the kit to do it.

Due to this years rubbishness there’s also now plenty of official race series containing many of the worlds real racing drivers involved. This weekend is also the World Finals of the FIA Gran Turismo championships.

It's definitely made strides this year with the limitations imposed by Covid. My comment was slightly tongue in cheek as I have little interest in sim racing as a participant but especially as a viewer. From the latter perspective it's superficially a good representation of the real thing, but ultimately lacks any purpose.

It makes me sad to see some of the manufacturers throwing effort behind sim racing whilst cutting back on their real world projects (i'm especially looking at you BMW). I don't what future there is longer term down that path (for a manufacturer) as without the real racing, why should anyone have interest in their virtual attempts over a HorneyMX5Sport team or anything else?

Sorry for derailing your thread!

If only we had a sub-forum to discuss it! Lol.

I’ve got quite into watching it as the skill set and levels is virtually identical to those used in a real car. I appreciate how hard it is to deliver fast clean laps with other drovers around. Someone said “The cars aren’t real, but the racing is.” Which I think is a summary of things.

As for manufacturers, I agree it seems a bit odd. I guess they see it influencing brand loyalty. If you race a virtual M4 GT3 you can drive a 120i in real life.
