“Report” function. What’s the point?

I’ve reported a couple of comments, which are demonstrably false and offensive, yet they are both still on the thread.
Are the “Report” button notifications actually looked at/reviewed, or is it utterly pointless even bothering?
They do seem to be looked at- I have reported various spam posts and they rapidly get removed. Perhaps the stuff you are talking about is harder to make a decision on though. Are the “Report” button notifications actually looked at/reviewed, or is it utterly pointless even bothering?

Cheers. It just feels a bit disheartening to report something for nothing to happen. I think this is only about the third or fourth post I’ve ever reported in 17 1/2 years on PH, so I’ve seen plenty of utter dirge in that time, which should give an indication of how serious I think it is to even bother in the first place.
They do get looked at. As above, I've reported a few "new user, first post, obvious spam/scam/unauthorised advertising" type posts and they swiftly disappear. I've also had email notifications that i've had posts removed. Once because what I typed wasn't acceptable but was typed in the heat of a moment, and more often because whole sections of threads have had to be deleted to remove an offensive post and multiple quoting of it, and my reply now doesn't make sense stood on it's own.I accept that it could be disheartening to not see action taken on a post you feel strongly about, but moderators must be under a fair bit of pressure when so many threads/debates get quite heated. It's got to keep them quite busy, I'd have thought.

There's no easy way to give feedback regarding reports. The reports you've made were looked at but it was felt it was being addressed in thread by other posters. However the person in question hasn't taken that on board so has now been dealt with.
Thanks, I appreciate the update. I know the mods must get swamped, but you can see from my post on the thread in question how cheesed off I am, so I’m grateful it’s been looked at. Thank you.

I do have sympathy for the mods, I’ve been kicking up a bit of a fuss at work recently about poor quality investigations/statements/paperwork, which has won me a place on the “Quality and improvement” team (in addition to all the day to day work I’ve already got - I should know after 25 years plus in the job when to keep my gob shut… around bosses would be a good place to start!).

No problem.

Just a suggestion that you may be taking the internet a bit too seriously? I try to input my expert knowledge into threads as required, how trolls react after that doesn't worry me.
I stopped posting in the thread because I’d had enough of answering points raised, only for certain posters to keep spouting the same old b
ks that had been replied to, so I thought there was little point continuing.I was still reading and in all conscience, I couldn’t ignore the comments I reported (which have now been dealt with). I do post a lot less on PH than I used to previously, for similar reasons outlined above. I’ve been a regular officer for over 25 years and I was a special constable for five years before that, so I do have a level of expertise and experience, which could be useful to some posters starting threads and asking questions.
Unfortunately, there are a few posters who really have an anti police agenda. I’ve repeatedly said the police aren’t perfect and explained various things where stuff hasn’t gone how a poster thought it should have. It seems that some people are incapable of understanding that explaining is not analogous with excusing. I can often say why something has/hasn’t happened, which is t the same as saying I agree with it or it’s right.
But yes, you do make a valid point, it is just a load of 1s and 0s that ultimately doesn’t matter in the real world and I should probably be less bothered. That said, it’s kind of in my nature to try and help - hence the job I’m in!
On the plus side, I’ve met a few PHers in real life and some have even become friends, so on balance, I’m probably still ahead.

Yep, I’ve had an an argument with a now departed poster (who are we kidding, he’s had about 400 different usernames…) who tried to use google and wiki to tell me how to do my job and even what I was earning. No amount of ‘I think I know how much I’m paid’ would convince him otherwise.
It’s an odd trait on PH.

I got banned for a week, and the irony it was for one of my lowest level comments. Still, it works. So now you know that, you can stop moaning and get back reporting. Are the “Report” button notifications actually looked at/reviewed, or is it utterly pointless even bothering?
