Is the Thumbsnap image uploader broken?

How big are the image files?

Closer to the max allowed and the longer it takes to upload

Ah that could have been it. I did check and the initial files were too large so I compressed them down to 2MB but it still just span, spo maybe it was just taking a while.

It normally is file size - I tend to compress files down to 100 KB size - uploads are almost instantaneous and I can't say I notice any significant quality loss in the image on a forum but my eyes aren't as good as they used to be
