We are rolling out a new login system in the next few weeks, using state-of-the-art technology for safer and more secure access to PistonHeads.

You will no longer be able to log in using your username, and will only be able to log in using the email address on your account.

As part of this update, you will no longer be able to change your username for better safeguarding in the forums.

If you usually log in with your username, we recommend that you check the email address on your account and log in using that now, so it is saved for when we move over.

If you use your email address already, then nothing further is required and you shouldn't notice any difference when we swap over.

not completely necessary, as long as you know what your current email and password is everything should still work just fine... the current process to change your email is quite cumbersome and the new system will eventually make it an easy process so, again as long as you know what your current email and password is, there's no immediate need to update your email to one you have access to

Erm, shouldn’t this be a flagged article on the landing page?

And I really don’t understand the ‘safeguarding’ thing - could you give more details?

Ah, ok, that's fine then, thanks.

We’ll get a similarly nonsensical response like we got when we questioned the security benefits of the multiple extra confirmation clicks to watch or bookmark a thread.

I’m not having a go at Ben, who is really good at responding to various issues. I. Ought be wrong, but I would guess that there is a significant proportion of readers who are also posters, and might miss this announcement.

Yeah I'm not having a go at any one individual, rather just flippantly voicing my frustrations.

Will this change privacy at all? i.e. will any personal information become public?

Yeah, what was that all about? I still don’t know why we have to confirm that we want to watch a topic?

My Tin Foil Hat wonders if this may be about effectively removing accounts with no valid email address, thus reducing the ability to post anonymously.

Which may or may not tie in with us being forced to log in with our government-issued, mandatory Digital ID at some point in the future.

[/Tin foil but not really]

What is the 'state of the art' log-in change referred to anyway?

Are we going to need to enter a validation code that is emailed to us when we want to log in?

Is there a big issue currently with stolen log-ins? Or a lot of confusion about name changes (which just need a quick search on a user's posts to confirm any previous user name(s) on posts)?

Mods, does this mean users will be able to track down the email address of another user? Just standard paranoia rather than donning my tinfoil hat.

You think that is not part of the planned end-game of the current push for Digital IDs, at the website level or the ISP level or both?

Bless.

Hmm, so as my username is currently one of my private plates, if and when I sell the plate I won't be able to change my username?
