My search function rarely works properly...

It doesn't pick up on threads that aren't word for word correct on the title....

When I risk a post that may be already in existence on the internet [I realise I should be thrashed soundly for this....] I risk the Repost Polic wrath....

How can I either get a better search / or reduce the button happiness of the repost police

???

The ridiculous irony is that this is indeed a repost: see here but I'm only pulling your leg with that. Look at that link it answers the question that there's a bit of a blip with it.

I assume you're trying to find the answer to your "how did it all start" question?! I'll have a search myself for you to see if I can find it.

Well...

That and the search issue - it really won't work for me
The link is fine - but it's not whats wrong with my search...whatever I put in it just gives me a million threads...

In the other thread I wondered if Ted would patch in the details up to date...

Ah ha, a couple to start you off;

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=120478&f=23&h=0&hw=why+ted+dave

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=105297&f=23&h=0&hw=why+ted+dave

I seem to remember there being some more specific ones though; I'll carry on searching.

Thanks for your help Tony [and this is NOT directed at you...] but those examples....2 years old and with ONE brief reply from Ted about how it grew up to then...

Kind of makes the whole "repost" claim a bit pathetic IMHO

It's like saying you can only ask "how are you?" once......

yeah sorry I didn't look through them in detail. There is a thread somewhere that explains it - just gotta find it!

The search facility works on an index of words contained withing topics. It doesn't currently search the titles (yes, I know that's a bit stupid). It's then ordered by the frequency of the words within a thread.

Aaaaahh....
Right - that explains a bit...[mine is so slow somtimes - it just goes into waiting for PH.com mode]

Still...as Gaz says above, if people weren't so eager to become "Captain Repost Blaster" then some of us recen additions could nose about a bit easier..

I was only interested...

Along with our sinbin & ban buttons, it'd be good/handy to have a "timeout" button every time someone replies "repost" so they can't post for 24hrs. I think the repost police nark me more than anyone else does...

Oh come on! I'm sure you have been guilty of it one time or another.

And if you did have that button I think that Shadytree would still be banned!

It's the people who constantly chant "repost" at just about everything on this site that bugs me.

Yep...

It like some kind of schlong waving competition..."Who can get there first!!!"
- it's rubbish for newer members.

- It's rubbish....

A bit....
But a few hours rummaging about for a few old threads isn't really as good, or as current as a few lines from the man who knows....
Which may well have been what we got if the other thread hadn't been jumped all over by "Captain Respost Blaster" and his sidekicks

For Gazboy. I might have to deliberately repost just so I can use that.
