I know the thread decended into a personal scrap between certain members, and fellow Phers tried to sort out by themselves and there were apologies and accusations etc... but surely closing it is a bit OTT, and it's stifeling debate TBH.Emotives subjects like this one always end up this way , and sometimes a policy of "laisser faire" might give a chance to the thread to go back on track after being slightly derailed.
We're all adults and can act childish sometimes, as long as we admit the errors of our ways, we can move on with the subject matter surely.
Could the drastic measure of closing it be reversed ?

Thank you.

Two threads have been opened to day on this same subject.

People will want to discus the sitaution somewhere and there was some interesting debate among the personal abuse (which did not only occur last night)

I wasn't contributing to the thread but was keeping up on it twice daily. I would also like to see it re-opened, may be a 72 hour stay in the cooler for anyone who brings the handbags out would be in order if it were to be allowed to continue.

Except people shout abuse even when there is none. Who decides on the 72 hour cooler stay?

No problem with that, BUT if they also descend into another personal slanging match....

The same thing will happen, they WILL also be closed.

Ted and the moderators of course.

I think what you should have said is people shout abuse even when you think you've done no wrong..

But is there any point in discussing middle east issues whatsoever? I reckon the Iraq war shows how much we know about the middle east, and that very much includes our government.

We here in the west, from heads of state down, know absolutely sod all about the world of the middle east, about what they think and how they function.

There is no truth.

Who says who is right and who is wrong?

May I suggest that the mods (reasonable ones and overzealous ones) actually clean up the thread by banning those who shout abuse and abuse the situation rather than spoiling it for everybody else and closing the thread?
Arguments and counter-arguments happen in everyday conversation , why should we have to be taught by a certain moderator how we should discuss the middle east and where should we discuss it(Hyde park) ? It smacks of dictatorial and undemocratic moderating TBH.
If a few are spoiling the conversation chuck them out of the pub, don't close the pub altogether for Christ sake!
Ok I got it out my chest now.
Rant over.

Hear hear. Thread closures over non-issues and one or two individuals taking exception to what everyone else sees nothing wrong with smacks of high-handedness.

Sometimes the moderators even admit to not having read the whole thread. How can they get a feel from cursorily reading just the last four pages which may focus on just one topic when the subject itself is being examined from innumerable angles?

If all participants of any thread actually adhered to the Rules of Posting, no mod would need to close a thread. I personally currently read around 2000 + posts a week. I do not have the time to read every post that is made.

Like the majority of people on here including the moderators I have a life outside PH. My average daily time spent on PH is around 2-3 hours, mostly mopping up errors, moving posts, abuse reports / abuse emails, general cleaning up and the occasional odd post in the forums. We do not have the time to read every post hence the abuse button.

So just in case you have failed to read the Rules of Posting I'll put the first one up here for you.

The Rules
1. The Rules apply anytime you post something on the forums or otherwise use or participate in any interactive service on or through this Web Site.

i. Unlawful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, libellous, deceptive, fraudulent, invasive of another's privacy, sexually explicit, pornographic or otherwise violates our Rules and/or the Terms of Use and Privacy Policies. While we want to encourage creative, original and thought-provoking discussions. The forums are not intended to be a free forum for personal attacks on others or a forum to make disparaging remarks about any person or entity. Nothing you do should interfere with anyone else's use and enjoyment of the Web Site;

That first rule alone, is abused by many on a daily basis by many.

So here’s the Deal…….

You adhere to the rules of posting, and I and the rest of the mods will go back to sleep!

OR if you want us to BAN the rule breakers instantly, that can also be arranged.

Disparaging of any entity.

I fail to see how you can force that...from cars to countries, there is often disparagement in any discussion unless we only post glowing reports. Enforcing that becomes selective and opens up a whole can of worms. I would ask that that wording be removed or amended to "excessive disparaging" which is still a very big grey area but gives mods and users some room.

Look if YOU don't like the rules or feel that you cannot abide by them, may I humbly suggest you take it up with the site owner.....PetrolTed.

Or conversely I could always put you in the Sin Bin, so you can speak to him directly when he returns from the Motor Show!
