What's the reasoning behind using this spelling over the "jail" commonly accepted these days?
There may be a good reasons behind it but it smacks of "We know more words than you, you idiot" to me.

Gaol is Jail in Austrailian English, I believe

It's English in origin, ergo it's the proper one to use.

Because it's feedback on the website. Gaol is often seen in the front page news articles. Just wondering why it's used, as PH is the only place i've ever seen that spelling of it in modern use.
