Fake edit line in posts?

All those experienced posters out there: Editing a post will result in an automatic horizontal separator with a small comment underneath, quoting time and author of the edit.

But
- some folks know how to edit the auto-comment (" ... cause I can't spell..."
- some folks even insert edit marks at will

Formatting codes pop-up is no help - so where's the secret manual to advanced posting?

It's done using the [ footnote ] code.
