Something that's been bugging me

It is to do with the daily news items on the home page. Why don't they display in chronological order? Say, for example, I read an article in the morning and then come back to check the home page in the afternoon there is a new news item but it's displayed under the article that I've already read, sometimes quite far down the list. Why can't the more recent news articles be displayed at the top of the list?

The system was set up so that stories can be arranged in order of perceived importance. So if a big story breaks early in the day then we can keep it higher than newer, less important stories.
