Any chance of Gassing Station being given more resources? If someone or something working for me was this slow, I'd kick it up the arse.

It's not great ... hasn't been for a while.

It's probably to$sers using unnecessary, superfluous smilies causing it.

If the 'page load rate' slows right down I find that hopping to another site then straight back again sees the pages loading much faster again????????????? Does that tell anyone with knowledge on these matters (cookies, cache) anything worth knowing? hehe

It speeds up very quickly if you use Firefox and block the Haymarket adserver...

It's stupidly slow on my FF browser.

Have haymarket implemented some new advert type software?

We are constantly working on this and trying to improve it. We have had another massive jump in users of the sites, we did 106 million pages last month which was a 20% increase in traffic from the previous month, and much more than even my optimistic forecasting had predicted.

I know there have been talks of contigency planning and PH should prepare for jumps in traffic and usage through increased exposure, but the truth is more people using the site does not mean more money coming in to the site, and thus I can't simply go and buy more hardware for the site as the budget hasn't grown, so it is all about optimising what we have got already, plus some of the problems are not linked to hardware and thus require more time fetling the code behind the site to cope with the amount of users.

Thus I think the PH team working on keeping this site up and running 24/7 (both of us that is) for you all to enjoy are doing an amazing job with the resources available, though I'm sure that you all have positive opinions on this to motivate the workforce wink

I know it can be unbearable at times and really frustrating, and we feel your frustration too as we are PH users, so we very sorry you are suffering from these problems.

Again, sorry for the problems caused this month and we in PH are working very hard on solving them.

Right must get back to the arcade... whatever that is??? smile

Seems a pity the generally more used P+P GG and a few others places, can't be prioritised, pushing the little frequented threads into a backwater for access only in off-peak times.
I suggest:
TVR (anything)
Landrover + computer games to begin with,
Possibly drop the other dull items to speed up thopse that I like really,

So how does that sound?

I'd rather see the P&P down graded in priority, with longer waiting times it would make the purile daily crap posters think twice about posting their purile daily crap.

OK I've reconsidered the P&P,
and on closer examination you may have a point so I'll concede that much, the others stay
(with another to be added depending on my findings later)

either boats
or venues BTW

As such if the site can't handle the increased traffic wouldn't the marketing budget be better spent on hardware to support the existing user base rather than attracting new users which a) don't bring extra income and b)the site is unable to support?

Don't get me wrong, I do not blame the poor reliability of the site on those who have inherited it who seem to be doing their best with what they have available, moreso the general approach to running the brand.

Surely with increased page impressions you can sell more advertising therefore creating more revenue to spend on hardware?

When I advertised on PH, i was charged per block of 50,000 impressions (or something along those lines).

With increased userbase you theoretically should also be able to charge more for the advertising? Unless Haymarket account for the revenue in different profit centres?

The extra users have come through indirect marketing which we have no control of (e.g. word of mouth and search engines) thus making it hard to control.

The database where the forums are generated from, and the code to generate it to the web page, are the same for any forum be it P&P, General Gassing, or the Switzerland Forum. Thus there are no priorities, nor can there be more priorities on certain forums as the page will not know what forum it is building till it looks in the database and it might as well get out the data for the page if it has to look anyway.

Yes, but you a) have to sell the increased advertising space and b) you can't do that until you have the increased advertising space... bit of a chicken and egg situation (By the way the answer to that is the egg, as the mutation of an animal breed has to happen as the egg forms)

Any more quesitons? thumbup
