Whilst I am not offended by the 4th post a little way down the page: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

I realise that younger eyes than mine may be reading......

P.S. Is there another way of reporting the swear filter not working? - First time I've had to do it you see

Probably best to use the Report feature - you can add a comment that you're only reporting an issue, not complaining or trying to get anyone in trouble, etc.

Just looked at this and I assume it is the third post using the word 'screwing' which you are refering to.

Unfortunately this is one of those words that has a perfectly legitimate use, as well as an offensive use which makes it pretty much impossible to censor automatically.

We have enough problems with shorpe!

If you see someone being offensive then the best course of action is to report it to the mods who will take the appropriate action (whether that is censoring the word, deleting the post or something more serious)

Just looked in the mods forum and Ted had removed it from the topic last night.

There are ways of intentionally dodging the swear filter and this is what had happened in this case.

The swear filter is working fine.

There is however a means of bypassing it. Which was what was done in the post you are referring to.

In a search or filter it would not show up as a swearword. yes It just "looks" like one.

Tricky to code up a more draconian filter... scratchchin Is it really worth it?

I suspect the mods will start "having words" with people doing it... paperbag

I agree. Plus I've noticed the level of foul language is getting a little OTT. I'm never going to say I've never pitched in before with some bad language but some of the content from this thread:

http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

.....was getting a little out of hand and I think mods should have stepped in before I mentioned something.

I think a general noticed to all would calm things down a little. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if there were some under-age PH'ers around and about the forums and since there is no 18+ check, I think things should be kept under control a little more....

Correct - the post was removed about 20 minutes after I reported it

I'll use the word (which I realise rude/wrong/offensive etc) but thought it was a bit much to see it on PH without it being "bleeped out"

I know how it was done and can see why the filter didn't flag it!!!!

In polite company at least - yes.

It's never been on the substitution list on here as far as I can recall.

By the way, tis easy to modify the parser to kill the "workaround".

Rather than just search for "fuc" and then the last letter, you could simply check for any string that contains a square bracket and then clarify to your heart's content with checking for an f at the beginning, or a c at one end and a t at the other etc. I can't think of a valid reason to put tags within a single word, so you might as well use it as it'll already be in the code for searching for "proper" tags to parse into bold, italic etc.

Never! You can't censor shit! That would be like censoring damn or hell.

I didn't mean to imply it should be censored, just that I think it's best not used in polite company. Clearly, PH not included. wink

Just added a bit to the Bentley TDi story and used the word shit at one point. It wasn't picked up by the swear filter. I thought it used to be... Or am I just imagining things?
