Some advice to all these people moaning about ads.

Why don't you just browse PH with Firefox - free - and install the Ad Blocker Plus add on - free.

The result? PH - Ad Free!

It is quite frankly superb. No annoying ads, no pop ups, and very, very quick page loading.

Hopefully this won't count as advertising on PH - which would be ironic - as it's all free anyway!

It does. It doesn't stop the generally slow servers but everything else is sorted.

You just see a place holder where the ad would've been, with the word Advertisement in it. The ad doesn't even start loading.

Wonder if someone at PH knows - does the ad that gets blocked get counted towards the amount that is purchased?

Good question.

If they get paid on click throughs, then they're getting nothing. If they're purely paid on page counts, then it would, I assume, require my machine to send back some sort of acknowledgement to say that the ad had been viewed or not?

I can understand people blocking pop ups because they are the most annoying thing ever, but why be so negative towards the advertisers? PH doesn't cost nothing to run. Why not just let the ad load? There have been occasions where the ad server that injects code into PH has slowed the pages down, but by and large its not really a problem.

The ad blocker stops all sorts of ads all over the place, including pop ups. You don't tell it to nuke the ads on specific sites, it just does whatever it does in the background.

I wasn't trying to specifically be negative towards PH advertisers, but you do frequently see people getting frustrated on here with the time it takes for pages to load, and I've got absolutely no problem with it at all. The only difference I can think of is that ad blocker, hence the advice.

Sure, when the hamsters have a fit, I'm affected just like everyone, but I've never had a problem with the speed of the site, and if that is making people get frustrated to the point of going elsewhere, it's going to have exactly the same impact on advertisers as just blocking the ads in the first place.

From what I saw, and apologises if I'm wrong, the ad code was injected into the html as you download a page was the reason for the half downloaded page, so an ad blocker will make no difference whatsoever in displaying the page as its still waiting for the code from the server in the first place. Thats why (from what I could see) the page download stopped just where the ad was about to be placed, hence thinking a bit of code was being injected in.

I can understand popups being unwelcome but just block pop ups in your browser.

because if i understood what i was told there correctly an ad-blocker would stop the pages freezing halfloaded waiting for the ads. yes the hamsters play up at times but the vast majority of times i end up going 'sod it, next forum' is when PH wont load any pages past the advert. it gets there & hangs for minutes which is rather fustrating when you want to read the bottom half of the page.

I'm not that clued up on the how's or why's, but the blocker definitely prevents the hangs - I don't think it's the loading code from the server, I think it's the bit that comes after that that hangs the page.

thing is that the advertisers also run other adverts on other sites and without going into too many details as have already given them... get not a lot of problems with adverts
