People moaning about ads..

Why not have an options whereby it costs, say.. a fiver and the site will be ad free forever for that user.
Pros: Happy users
Quicker loading for users
Supplement PH beer fund *very* nicely.
Less bandwidth consumed by ad agencies + end users.
Cons: Dev time to make the backend code to not serve ads to paying users.

Think about it. 5% (say) of active users purchase it. That means that your potential audience is reduced by 5%. Of that 5% how many would actually click on ads and generate revenue? 10%? Less? probably.
1) Propose change to users
2) Push change to site based on overwhelming feedback
3) Profit!

Why would you not want to give money to a site that you spend a significant amount of time on? How many pages do you think you load a night? 100?
Average of, say 50K a page load, that's 5 megs a day, that's 1.8 gigs a year.
We'll round that up to 2 gigs because
a) I'm lazy
b) They're charged in whole units.
Now my host charges 20p per gigabyte of data used OVER my limit. I have no idea how to put any other value on how much bandwidth costs so i'm going to go with that for the time being.
Now based on that it means that for each user, to break even, they need to recoup 40p from each user per year. Advertising normally works on a "per click" basis meaning that no money is given for the ads sitting there slowing the place down but IS given for each "clickthrough" that the ad agency receives from the site. Again, not sure on numbers but I would imagine it's about 2p per click. Now unless EVERY FORUM USER clicks on atleast 20 ads per year they're not going to break even.
That's not taking into account other overheads.
Now say we have a million subscribers, 5% of that is.. 50,000. If each of them pay £5 that's quarter of a million. That's more then the ads would make in a few years i'm sure.

Because it's now owned by a large publishing company.Because if they charged for it people would leave in droves, so I wouldn't spend much time here
Because there are plenty of other sites that don't charge
But mostly...
Because if they spent some money sorting out the adverts so that they loaded rapidly, didn't interrupt the flow of the page (which I understand they are working on) and made them target based, nobody would have a problem with them, so wouldn't need to turn them off.
