Picture sizes question

I'm intrigued to know why the max displayed picture width is a strange 750 pixels (well thats what I've been told).
Why isn't it a standard 800x600 or 640x480 max size?

Assuming you are talking about the classifieds, we do not have a strict maximum picture size. We recommend that the file size is less than 500kb to avoid timeout problems but apart from that there are no limits.

Once the pictures reach our servers they are resized to 640x480 (so there is no point sending anything bigger than that anyway) and this is the size they are displayed at on the large picture window.

Sorry I should have been more specific.
I am talking about when I post pictures on forums using [img] and [/img] in my posting using links to photobucket.
Am I correct in thinking that the pictures are reduced in size to 750 pixels wide if they are bigger?
This creates a jagged effect on my pictures that I'm trying to avoid.
I've posted at 640x480 and they seem OK, but are a bit small.

I think it is 750px on the basis that everyone uses 1024x768 so starting from the 1024 width, you need to take off the window frame, scroll bars, and the left column of the forum posts (where the user and post count / length of membership is shown) which leaves about 770px to take the post contents.

I have herd that this is the reason too. Purely for the majority of people's viewing benefit.

You can always click the image to make it bigger and uncompressed if people want to see it at it's best.

Personally I think everyone should get a 22" monitor, run it at 1680 x 1050 and thus have no problems with bigger pictures.... :P
