Another server glitch at lunch where it decided it wouldn't bother seeing the database.

We are working on some better procedures to be able to handle if one of the servers has a software failure, to compliment the hardware failover we currently have in place.

Is it regular? I get this daily. I'd go as far as to say it is broken far more than not, when I try to search. Is this your fault, or mine?!

Is this regularly happening in the early mornings?

To stop massive load on the database servers during the day we create a backup of the topics and put them in a search database, this then re-indexes the data. Looks like the re-indexing is taking longer than the period we have set for the search to move databases, so will extend the time and see if that fixes it.

Not sure it is early mornings only. I'll keep an eye and see. Interestingly, I have noticed on occasion, that sometimes when the search fails (after trying 4 or 5 times) I can get it to work using the advanced search "exact phrase" option...

Well I've been trying to use search since 07:30 (BST) and it's 09:30 and still doesn't work. Is it just me?!

What search terms are you looking for, as just tested now and it is working fine, so checking if it might be something else.

This morning I was trying

"three peaks"

(no quotes), next time I notice it fail, I'll try some different terms, but I have definitely tried changing terms when it has failed on me before, and none of them made it work. Can't remember what those were now though!

If I do a search for 'Alfa', the first page always shows a load of results from the P+P. If I sort them by 'most recent' it seems to work, but if I sort them by 'messages found' then it doesn't show some threads that it should, e.g. the 'is Clarkson right' thread isn't listed.

Trying now, and it is broken for me.

Tried:

"three peaks"
"bmw 320"
"speed matters"
"something else"

Always the same "Technical team have been notified" (Which I assume they haven't;))

Cheers Pete. 7:35 now, and have tried searching a number of times and still not working...?

Is anyone else having this trouble at this time too?

It 'works' for me, in as much as it returns some results with no error messages.

But the results I get today are exactly the same (give or take) as yesterday, i.e. the 'is Clarkson right'* thread still doesn't appear.

So whatever changes Pete made yesterday, they don't seem to have had any effect. frown

* not that I'm especially interested in that thread, but for months it was the first result returned in the list (presumably it has the word 'alfa' in it more than any other thread) and now it doesn't appear at all. So although it's a dull thread, it's a handy test of whether the search is working properly. Which it still isn't.

Interesting, because still now, I get the same error screen on every search...

Zeek.. can you detail what you do.

Eg.
  • Click Search
  • Enter "BMW Best Tyres"
  • Click next page
  • Go into topic
  • etc.
Just so I can replicate it here

sorry this is taking so long to diagnose

Sure...

- Navigate to search from the Search dropdown at the top (to http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/search.asp?h=0)

- Enter "three peaks", hit "Search"

- Page says 'searching for '+ three + peaks'"

- Ends up at "Sorry, something's not quite right.
The technical team have been notified."

With a back button, which just goes back to the intermediate page, and re-tries the search, and ends up at the error page again...

(This is happening right now for me...) There is an IP commented out in the source, presumably for debug...

Exactly the same this morning, although I've noticed something else that might (or might not) be significant.

If the word I'm searching for appears in the body of a thread, but not in the title, then I get the little '+' to expand it - that's fine. And if the word appears in the title but not in the body, then I don't get the '+' - again, that's fine.

But if the word appears in the title and in the body, I don't get the '+' - I definitely used to.
