Why does the search function never work at night?
Discussion
The search uses a different database to the main forum and this gets updated every early morning. This should mean the search results switch to a temp system when the backup is happening but this looks like it isn't working.
We are going to look at the whole forum search as a whole very shortly as it needs a major rethink.

Never mind 'at night', when is the search function going to be working properly again at all?
It hasn't captured thread details for at least two weeks - you won't get any returns for October and I'm not sure at what point in September it stopped.
In some sections, like P&P, it's an essential too, as news hits items hit it so fast you have to check for previous posts.

As it stands now, it will never work for P&P because the index is at best 24-hours out of date so even when working properly it can't prevent reposts of big news stories etc. miniman said:

In fact, I just tried 'smxxxies' in the search function. Nothing found. So it isn't doing this section either. Seems likely it isn't capturing any part of the site, I'd say.

At various points it's been due to be fixed sometime either "next week", "tomorrow", "soon" or "shortly". A fortnight ago it was to be fixed "as soon as possible".

Ah - thanks JamieAt various points it's been due to be fixed sometime either "next week", "tomorrow", "soon" or "shortly". A fortnight ago it was to be fixed "as soon as possible".
While we're about fixing the search function can it be extended to include the titles of threads? It's a bugger when you can remember the title of a thread but not a key phrase out of the body of it. Simply counting the title text as part of the body text, instead of considering it as a separate, ignored entity, would do the trick.
If it's already supposed to include the titles of threads, it doesn't work. For example, searching for why does the search function never work at night produces one thread on psycho exes and one on the Canon EOS 50D, and that's it.

I think you can't find contemporary threads because it hasn't been picking them up for a few weeks (as detailed above)If it's already supposed to include the titles of threads, it doesn't work. I have put some more monitoring on the search system to see what is going on with it and why it wont put the latest information into the search data. So hopefully I will be able to get more of a fix of the problem tomorrow morning.
In the meantime I am working on an alternative solution so that the search will only be an hour behind in a day and remove the need for backups nightly.
