REQUEST: view 500 posts on one page ?
Discussion
I changed the 'number of posts' setting to the maximum and it's much better to follow long threads (though even longer would be great!)
From other members' responses, it seems that not many users do though. Given that hardly anyone uses dial-up anymore, maybe the default setting for number of posts per page should be set at 40 or 80, letting people opt to have less if they are a user on a slow connection.

An interesting idea though I have to look at it with a commercial eye too.
If we change the number of default posts it will have a knock on to lots of other things and they could be good or bad for the site.

- It could result in number of page impressions dropping which then means a drop in ads served
- Also drop in page impressions could result in a drop in our rankings and affect future revenue and ad campaigns
- But it could mean that the number of seconds someone stays on our site is longer and they read more per click (thus search engine positioning goes up)
- Also the processing load on the servers will be affected by the increased amount of information they have to generate that might result in slow down of performance on the site
- But then with less pages being served it might increase performance

Interesting thoughts Pete, aside from the fact that the pictures aren't hosted on PH, there's also another consideration, you actually produce fewer hits on the database, although the queries might have to run a little longer...If we change the number of default posts it will have a knock on to lots of other things and they could be good or bad for the site.

Tough one to call!
I have just checked the take-up of people to changing the number of replies per page and it is quite small so we could look at extending to more posts as an option, but I wouldn't want to change the default amount of posts at the moment.
We are moving to a new hardware design for the site in the first quarter of next year so we will look into this again then.

The majority of people never consult the settings of forums. If you want 'x' to happen, it needs to be Admin led.We are moving to a new hardware design for the site in the first quarter of next year so we will look into this again then.
