They are a useful tool and can be interesting. If they start to get out of hand then a moderation crackdown on the useless ones might be the best option.

Good in theory, but what i find myself doing quite a bit is voting on the poll when i click then not bothering to add my comments to the thread.

But do you also vote on threads you probably wouldn't have bothered to comment on anyway?

If people have something interesting or important to say then they will generally comment regardless. When their comment would be along the lines of '+1' then the poll serves to provide an alternative, easier to read, way of expressing their views.
