Congratulations Pistonheads
Discussion
You've finally caused me to cave in and install an Ad Blocker. I know PH is a business and all that but the site seemed to run far better before Haymarket came along.
It just seems to have got gradually worse. It was the Hotels.com advert that did it for me. During the last day or two, coming to PH has been a nightmare. IE would use up 100% CPU, freeze for a good minute or two before finally loading that s
tty flash advert and handing control back over to me.
Then I'd have to go through it all over again when I'd click another thread.
So, congratulations, not only have you annoyed and irritated me over the last few days but I've resorted to having to install something to solve the problem and as a result I no longer see your adverts. I'm sure I won't be the only one that feels this way.

In the long term we plan on changing how the pages load, so that the adverts are the last things to appear.
This will mean that if the ads are running slow the rest of the page will show and work fine and the ads will appear whenever they are ready (or not at all!)
Unfortunately this is a big change, so in the short term I just have to keep shouting at people (which does actually yield results, albeit until the next problem advert appears)
I can echo what pikey says though, Google Chrome is effing fast!

it's a windows update that does it.. not sure which one though.
every so often my vista sneaks the updates past me and installs them - some websites such as ph start to run like a pig
if i then restore back to pre-update it all works fine
banner adds appears to be what it waits for to load

Try using Chrome - it seems to load the ads in another process, and how long they take isn't related to how long it takes to display the remainder of the page.
IIRC Chrome uses the firefox engine. On firefox, the ads make my machine 'pause' whilst loading a page.I think Google Chrome was a ground up jobbie by Google from what I read when it was released. I use it for everything now however a few sites don't seem to work. Works great on ph because everything is treated separately so no need to wait for the adds to appear to click on my stuff (which was my biggest hate)!
