A quick one, not sure how well this will go down with the PH lot. I was wondering why there is no use of avatars on this site. I think it might be quite cool to be able to have avatars available, but say only to those who have been on the site for over 3 months (just an example). Just a bit of personalisation really. The mods could have a bigger avatar or the word MOD under or over their avatar.
Just a thought.

Well said Kinky.
It's what separates the readable forums from the unreadable for me.
I've no wish to trawl through a page of animated gifs, 'amusing' pictures and the absolute horror of picture signatures that take up half a page with a naff picture of sidelights, foglights and a shopping list added on tat just to get to the meat of the posts. Which would then more than likely just be '+1'
sorry, have had to experience a couple of those boards recently!

OK, not that I'm a huge fan, would have been nice. But I like the idea of a low key site to use at work, so thats good. I was very curious to as to why they weren't up and if they would ever be introduced. Thanks for the replies though.
Oh, how can you tell then who a mod is?

We just don't here. It's what makes PH so great. There are loads of other forums around at allow half a page of spam to be vomited onto the end of each post automatically, if that's your thing.

I might have chosen gentler words, but I agree 100%. At the risk of being lampooned, PH does seem to conduct itself with a little more decorum and a bit less in-yer-face-look-at-me bling than other places. I like it that way.TotalControl said:

They serve very little purpose, clutter up the site and cause problems for people browsing at work (doubly so for signatures)We encourage people to express themselves via their considered replies (rather than automated junk, which just gets ignored) and give you a profile where you can tell others as much as you like about yourself and your cars

The question of avatars keeps cropping up, could there be a part of the sign-up for PH that states no avatars (or you shall be shot!)?There are loads of other forums around at allow half a page of spam to be vomited onto the end of each post automatically, if that's your thing.
Smilies however are fine! Cheers jon;)
I'm a fan of the no-avatar rule. It was a fair question OP, and now you've had a fair (if "diversely worded") answer.
Think of it like the uniform rule at school. If everyone's posts look the same, you can only judge them by their content. Also the "work safe" aspect is a big plus to a lot of us.
Oh, you just kind of get to know who the mods are if you have no life, and a really slow job. I'll write you a list if you like
