Pie and Piston waiting period for new members.
Discussion
This may have been considered first and I know that there is now a time limit for new members before they can post in the P&P but would a minimum posting level be a better idea, and extend this to all the non motoring fora?
This would mean that newbies would need to contribute to car based threads on several occasions, rather than having an idle account for a few weeks then launching into trolling or posting crap threads about being on a break.
At least that way you would not drive away car enthusiasts.

It is very easy for us to change the rule governing P&P access, so we can add something like this at a later date if we feel that the 14 days is not doing the trick.
The reason we went for a time limit rather than a post limit is because we didn't want to encourage newbies to spam the more serious forums, just to get into the P&P.
The 14 days should ensure all but the most determined trolls get bored and move on. Those who are determined to cause trouble will always find a way in, but are generally dealt with by the mods pretty quickly.

Maybe both? 2 weeks & say 20 posts, so they are making an effort to contribute.
Going on a couple of new posters this evening the 2 weeks rule definitely isn't working...
Actually, perhaps we could have a screening process: prospective members send in a CV, car history, that sort of thing, the good ones get called for interview, put in real life posting situations, that sort of thing?

We might try it in future, but would you really want 20 idiotic posts in the other more civilised forums, rather than the few muppets who are bothered to wait the two weeks posting a couple of times in the P&P before rapidly being introduced to Mr. BanHammer (tm)Going on a couple of new posters this evening the 2 weeks rule definitely isn't working...

How about, if they dont complete the profile fields, they dont come in as well ?
Ie, minimal info on profile and nothing to show ANY interest in cars.
That can be false anyway....Ie, minimal info on profile and nothing to show ANY interest in cars.
How many "members" post up a picture of a Ferrari Enzo in their profile when really they drive a beat up Morris Minor.....

Yes, but if they had to do both? ie, wait 2 weeks AND make 20 or so posts?
If they're crap posts then bin them off before the 2 weeks is up... Not a perfect solution I know, but might help?

How about closing membership applications during school/university Holiday periods?
