For a short time when you posted then returned to the thread you either got the 'Nothing to see here' page or were taken to a random page in the thread.

Is there a reason why Haymarket isn't keen to move PH to a "proven" forum software? No criticism or anything, just curious.

Horses for courses really.

Common forums (vBulletin, phpBB etc) have more use across the internet so have the added benefits of more features and more robust software. But these have to run on an architecture that supports them and even if running one of these mainstream forums you are still likely to have a problem if you are running on low hardware for your numbers. The other thing is that even though these forums are customisable, they aren't as custom as in-house software and we can do lots of things behind the scene that a mainstream forum can't.

If you look at the biggest forums in the world (according to www.big-boards.com) then 5 of the top 20 sites are using custom software and thus the business decision to have complete control over the forum development has been taken also.

When PistonHeads took a route to go to a custom built forum software the mainstream forums were not to the level that we could build and now the site is so heavily integrate to the forums we thus keep to our custom software.

In fact the clean look, no avatars, custom messages, no footers style I think is an advantage for us, and even across Haymarket (who use out of the box forum solutions on various brands) are looking at the PH forums as something to aspire to.

Pistonheads - No bullst matters.

The vast majority prefer it just how it is, simple and clean.

It also makes it much, much more suited to discrete reading in the office !
