What's New page is a bit clunky

But keeping the details? The problem* is that the lines are spaced further apart because the thread title scrolls onto the next line. So it looks different to the forums and there are fewer titles per screen. Unless you reduce the font size I don't think it'll fit.

I think you have hit upon the veritable Road to Damascus moment to solve the manure-storm which has been raging since Monday.The 'What's New' page is a list of threads...much like any other forum category. So make it look *exactly* like one....and add a preference to delete the forum name the thread resides in.
Once you make the leap of faith to make the link to the 'What's New' page appear in the list of forums - rather than a clunky menu - and allow the user to decide 'What's New' should be called - I'd call mine the "Pie and Pie", and have it at the top of the list of forums, just beneath General Gassing.
Finally...add some preference templates: the one I'm thinking of adds "Pie and Pie" at the top of the forum list, includes all of the Balkanised old P&P forums, and doesn't have the forum name in the thread list. Damn me....it looks *just* like the old P&P. Preference templates are good, particularly if you use a big button to select them. Ideally with a profanity in the label.
Allow the user to select this preference template by clicking a big button marked "I Want My Fecking P&P Back...Now!", then..bish...bash...bosh, jobs a good'un, your average punter gets a P&P forum back in the forum list, and everyone's happy.
Obviously, there are some navigation nuances, and the question of where new threads posted into this view are placed, but we'll deal with that tomorrow.
In the meantime, you get the Nobel Piston Peace Prize, and a stonking pay-rise. You lucky git.

How about going back to how 'What's New' works before the great change. It only shows the forums that people have listed as favourites? So it's filtered to the users preference, so they don't have to see all the threads that they aren't interested in.
