"Parsing error" - WTF?!?

At first it was just the work PC, so I thought it might be a network-problem (not knowing what 'parsing' is...). But no, it's doing it at home now too...usually when I try and preview a long post that I've spent AGES typing up (to check the formatting makes sense)...only for it to lose all my text when I hit the back button on the browser.

So...what's going on guys?!?

Just previewed the whole of the formatting help, and tested the upload stuff and all working fine on preview and submission.

Did you use the upload (beta), as we have just spotted a problem with this page which is now fixed?

No, just normal text with a bit of formatting...and often a few quotes.

It's about 1 post in 10-15, but once it's done it once on a particular thread it seems to repeat.

What web address are you using to access PistonHeads?

Though if it is intermittent then it might not be related to that. Next time you have a problem can you post the text you are having issues with here and what forum it is in and I will have a look.

Ah...just happened again. Always (or almost so, at least) when previewing a post, if that makes any difference?!?

Has happened in IE 6.0 and in Firefox 3.xx Always using www.pistonheads.com.

Hmmm...is that a recommendation anywhere outside of the US though - "US car beats other US cars and a Hyundai on US roads".

I'll await a review by e.g. evo or Car magazines (or one of the big German mags) vs the EU and Jap competition before casting stones, but what you've said above isn't exactly conclusive...

Not just about 'feel' at all...very little so*...it's about:-
- how well the car maintains contact with the road
(which is down to suspension geometry and spring and damper rates);
- how well the car stays on-track when going over bumps, crests, cambers etc.
(which is down to castor, toe, 'height' of front suspension, king-pin inclination and most especially the range of movement / number of anchor points of the steered and the driven wheels - that last is one area where a live axle (or even a De Dion) loses out in a big way to IRS.
- how well (quickly, precisely, predictably) the car responds to driver inputs - steering, brake, throttle.


Finally, if IRS wasn't the 'best' solution without constraints, why would e.g. F1 use it?!? Typically though IRS is more space-intensive than the other options, so in a compromise road car (i.e. everything short of a Caterfield/Atom or a full-on supercar) it sometimes has to give way in the name of boot space, or cost, or another packaging issue. Doesn't mean the alternatives aren't any good, just usually not as good as the same car would have been if designed WITH IRS.

Right worked out the problem.

The title of the thread has a hyphen in it, but (in the words of M&S) this isn't any hyphen, it is a Microsoft Word hyphen, and this has special codes attached to it. Well this special character is causing the "Parsing Error" so we will look into fixing it.

I have updated the title of the thread so that it will work in the meantime as it might be a couple of days for us to sort this out in the code.

This problem must have been around for a few years, but luckily two of you spotted it at the same time and thus I could compare both... Some days it is like CSI here
