This is not a piss take thread so don't go and jump on me here. Please read all the way through.

Why was the P&P changed to split the topics up?
P&P was cool and everyone loved it, but its changed and wont go back we've all accepted that.

But it was changed so all the different subjects then went into their own groups, i kind of understood it but hated it, but, then got used to it.

Now, say you choose a topic in the lounge, once you've read it, replied to it or whatever you like you can now press a link which takes you to a domain called "Pie and Piston" which is now EXACTLY the same as the old P&P in that you can view all the topics from all the subject areas, so what was the point in the change in the first place??

On the upside, more specialist topics don't vanish as quickly. I wasn't sure at first, but now I do prefer the new layout

After countless threads, some 50 pages in length, I have yet to see a decent answer to that question.

Same here, seems the mods don't like to explain their actions

This is certainly an upside.

Though does rely on people browsing the sub-sections individually rather than using the 'What's New' feature across all of their favourite groups.

We explained over and over again in the 50+ page threads, however because our answer didn't match the conspiracy theories it was not accepted.

The reason, quite simply, was to try and make PH a better place.

The Pie & Piston was becoming too fast moving which was leading to a lot of potentially interesting topics (particularly the deeper, more thoughtful ones) dropping off into oblivion with those that generate the same old keyboard warrior flamewars, tired in jokes (MX5, Oxo, 335d, etc), and smutty humour hogging the front page.

The split was designed to make it easier to find the more intellectual topics and allow them to flourish, in the way they used to when PH was smaller, while still having a space for the general community chat in the form of the lounge.

The reason the lounge was moved down the list with the rest of the non-motoring forums was both to make people realise they exist and to re-enforce the fact that PH is a site for car enthusiasts, discouraging the more "undesirable" new members that the P&P used to attract from joining.

As I'm sure you know there was quite a backlash to this, so we listened to the complaints and came up with a solution to them. We kept the separate forums (for the reasons outlined above) but built a new page based on the "What's New" system which allows you to see the whole Pie & Piston if that is the way you prefer.

We think that giving you the choice is the best solution and it seems to be working. The new page is also quite useful for browsing other divided areas, such as Events, General Motorsport or TVR.

We do listen though, so if you have any more comments or suggestions then we will take them on board.

Thank you Mr Will, now i understand it a bit better and can see why you have done this. I just couldnt get my head around it to begin with.
I do actually now like the new format, didnt at the start though.

I still don't think it's "better". However, I understand why it happened and I've made myself get used to the new layouts.

I still think that there are far too many "sub-fora" and I would like to see some of them amalgamated.

All the business, finance and employment forums should be merged, in my opinion and I think that there is no proper home for general science and space related discussion.

Eric,

I know you are well respected in this forum and some of your responses have really helped clear things up for me.

But, we have been nothing but negative on this subject and are obviously not getting used to it.

Personally, I like the new layout, I have reduced the amount of Forum on my Favourites list to what I want and only dip in and out of the Lounge every so often. I am much happier with it now then I was before.......If you haven't gotten used to it I don't know what to suggest..

Yours, Curry Burns,

Sorry - but PH is an open house regarding opnions and I will not be bullied into admitting I was somehow "wrong" on this or billied into "praising" the new layout. I will never like it and I will never get "on message" regarding it as a result. However, I still like PH overall and have learned to get used to the "new way".

As I said in the previous post, it could still do with a bit of tidying up but I recognise that the old P&P will never return so I have come to terms with that.

Yes, this is how I now use the Forums, and from a purely personal point-of-view, it works for me. In effect, it filters out a lot of the drivel that clagged up the P&P before. The one downside is the lack of critical mass in some sub-forums, but my gut feeling is that that will be less of a problem as users aclimatise to the new format.

A tentative thumbs-up from me.

That's my view too. Some debates and topics languish forlornly in their newly isolated little backwaters BUT as more people learn about the various ways of accessing these threads (or even just realise a particular forum actually exists) the traffic will gradually increase.

I still think a few of the related forums should be merged though.

Eric, forums aren't set in stone. They are fluid and can & will be tweeked as and when they need it. I think the only thing standing in the way of a home for science & engineering topics is a catchy name for the forum & I'd suggest that new forum evolves from the boats/trains/planes forum.

If you look at PH through an archive site you can see the Gassing Station constantly evolving, often rapidly with new forums added every couple of months (or removed or several merged) every few months since PH was created. Take a look, it's quite interesting watching the GS grow smile
I'm all for natural growth and organic change. But what happened back in April was a bit of a PHquake. Still, I'm getting used to it.

I agree about the "Boats, trains and planes" forum "evolving" into a more general "science and engineering" type forum.

I'm nor arguing (any more smile).

I accept the changes.

It's always unfortunate when an unruly minority cause problems for the better nehaved majority - but that is the nature of things, I suppose.

Nice to see all these positive comments. As has been said before, there might be a couple of minor tweaks but it seems to be working pretty well at the moment.
