why would you want to be able to do this? We have swear filters at work, so by allowing posters to have the ability to 'switch off' the swear filter would more than likely lead to it being banned from here.
Don't really see any benefit tbh
The benefit is that people would have the choice not to be nannied. If people where you work don't want to get PH banned there then don't turn off the filter. Simples.Don't really see any benefit tbh
The filter as it stands is far too draconian and filter pathetic words. e.g. Mr. Jones went to S
horpe to attend a conference on the b
disation of language.AFAIAC it is broken and I would prefer the option to turn it off. If others wish to keep it they would have the option to leave it in its default state.
If PH was to end up on one of the major block lists then it could disappear from a large number of offices around the country overnight, regardless of whether the individual users had the swear-filter on or off.
The swearfilter is not new and I do not see what you stand to gain simply by being able to read a few rude words.

It's called choice. I don't like being told what I can and can't read, especially so when the words that are filtered are NOT swear words. If you can't fix it so that it behaves properly and only filters words that really are offensive (matter of opinion) then at least give us the choice of being able to turn it off on a per user basis. The swearfilter is not new and I do not see what you stand to gain simply by being able to read a few rude words.

I must admit, one of the great things about the PH forums is (as has been alluded to) is the lack of avatars and sigs. This, of course, means that during work it just looks lie one is reading an e-mail (after scrolling quickly past the ads on the RHS of every thread).
However a post, or thread, with many swear words (words dictated by the incumbent swear filter) has a large number of red "marks" on the screen that will show that I am not reading an e-mail but browsing PH. Compare this with a local forum that I mod, which allows t
t, b
h, bulls
t. b
ks etc but which disallows the more extreme language examples.

The thing is, this site belongs to somebody. It's not yours to do with as you wish therefore you have to abide by the rules.
I'm not asking to do with it as I please. I am asking to be allowed to read what has been written without having someone else decide for me what I can and cannot see. I am not even asking for it to be removed altogether, only that the individual user be allowed the choice of whether their viewing is censored or not.Edited by Strangely Brown on Saturday 5th September 18:44

The day that happens is the day I leave PH.
Plus it would be blocked at work anyway - like most other companies. And would be the death knell for PH. All, so some morons can post unnecessary rude words
You appear to misunderstand. I am not asking to be allowed to post rude words. I am asking to be allowed the choice to read what others have written without nanny saying, "poo is a rude word, you mustn't see it".Plus it would be blocked at work anyway - like most other companies. The filter can be on by default but the individual should be able to choose whether what they see is censored. To say that it would be the death of PH is a bit of an exaggeration at best.

Really? So you think it would be fine and fully acceptable for the majority of PHers who work in the city, and large corporates, and companies around the UK, and WW, to suddenly lose access to PH at work, as it has become a blacklisted site?
I suspect not. So no exaggeration.

OK. Well, if you're not prepared to stop nannying us and deciding for us which words are "rude" can you at least fix the bloody thing so that it doesn't filter words that have no "rude" value whatsoever? As it stands the only "morons" (your words, not mine) are those that compile the blacklist without a corresponding whitelist to correct the false positives.
