embedding videos

Will we ever be able to embed a video on the ph forums? Seems its becoming an ever more popular feature on other forums I use (not just that forum!)

Embedded videos is something that we are looking into but there are a large number of higher priority projects which means unfortuantely it is not likely to happen in the immediate future.

Please, NO! some pages take long enough to load with just static photos...video could kill the forum - esp if people start dropping NSFW videos into threads.

Some people still can't work out what they can post and what they shouldn't, giving them the option to embed a video they shouldn't even post a link to would be going too far. See no need for it anyway, if you want to post a video post the link.

The videos would not load or play until clicked on (so wouldn't slow things down) but would mean you wouldn't have to go to a different page to watch them. They would also give people a better idea of what to expect rather than just a random youtube link (which could be anything).

ah well, maybe one day! As for the nsfw video problem, most sites only allow youtube videos to be imbedded and youtube doesnt usually allow porn etc videos on its site.

why though, its exactly the same as posting a picture, except if you click it it plays a movie. We could see peoples track day exploits without having to navigate away or get ph tv to work.

If its a modding problem your worried about it surely less hassle than the animated gifs people post which play automatically?

you do realise that if the videos were embedded you could actually see the first frame and the videos title so you could decide to watch it or not? Unlike now when you have to blindly click a link unless someone has typed the description into their post.

I do find your attitude towards the youtube thread slightly odd, admittedly some of its rubbish, some of it bizarre, some of it good. Its in the lounge so its to be expected its a bit hit and miss, not everyones opinion of "good" will be the same. To call a lot of the videos "ste" is pretty rude considering the folk posting them thought they were good or interesting.

If it became that much of a problem you could limit the embedded videos to the purely car based forums so as to weed out potentially purile ones and keep the vids on topic.

actually as I have a youtube account I have access to every youtube video going but thats not the point, I just dont want to have to navigate away from PH to watch a video, I cant see why thats such a bad idea. The quality of the videos posted is essentially irrelevant to the arguement as theyll be exactly the same videos as are linked to now, except you can see what it is before you watch it or, in your case, bin it.

Just to put the official line on this...

We are looking at a way of revamping PH.TV towards the end of this year, beginning of next and as part of this plan we are looking at implementing a way of embedding videos into forum posts.

We need to look at the effect embedding video has on the forum speed, as it takes time to download the embed player and the start of the video for each one regardless of if it is played or not. If we find that it detracts from the forum experience we may choose to not allow embedded videos, but that is to be decided later... at the moment the plan is to.

We will also look at restricting the embedded videos to those on PH.TV, so will be car related and (initially till it really takes off) approved by our TV moderator (eg one of the four of us sitting in the office).

We are looking at several deals with external companies to provide interesting, related content to PH.TV, and the ability for members to submit links to videos on external sites through these deals so watch this (slightly extended) space.
