Last night watching News at Ten I listened to the story of a 2 year old girl called Sophie Atay who is dying of cancer. In a nutshell she has a 20% chance of living with the treatment over here, but a 90% chance of recovering if she is treated in the USA.Unfortunately she must have the treatment in around 12 days for maximum effect, and the appeal is still short of the amount needed by a significant margin. Counting my blessings and feeling humbled after News at Ten, I posted a link to her appeal on here, thinking every little helps, and it would be good PR for Pistonheads if it had any effect on the appeal (even Brake couldn't find fault with that!)The post was immediately removed by a mod and I received a mail saying it's not allowed. Now I appreciate that there are many deserving cases ( which I did point out in my original thread)but quite what harm this was doing being posted up is beyond me. It wasn't a direct begging letter by me ( I have no connection whatsoever)it was just a link to the site ( which seemed to be really struggling with the extra traffic immediately after News at Ten,so hopefully that's some good news). And this is a website that was happy to give publicity to win a Melling wildcat via a raffle?
On the basis of the above, wouldn't we all be pissed off if having been(God forbid) in a similar position we couldn't have access to the continued overwhelming goodwill of people on here?
Mod please let this be a discussion, in this instance I've posted no links.

That does seem a bit st. Especially with all the other crap on these forums. Was it not allowed when all the Hammond free PR stuff was in full swing?

Have to agree with the OP. And so would the folks from Yorkshire Air Ambulance, I imagine.

Don't get me started about threads being deleted. rolleyes

I also watched this on the news & felt that i wanted to help in some way.
Such a shame PH didnt allow such a genuine cause to be posted on here!
I am guessing yet another power trip.

Does seem odd - plenty of good causes get an airing on here (Sporting Bears, Hammond Air Ambulance, etc.).

Some consistency needed I think.

We don't allow charity threads as a rule, and that has always been the case believe it or not. Yes there are some charities that PH get behind as a company (the previously stated Air Ambulance and BTaP as examples) but we don't allow charity threads to be started in the forums.

Why? Well with all the forums we have we risk being overloaded (and already have many requests daily) with high profile charity causes, sponsored walks, car rallies etc, etc and those that we do allow often head off topic rather quickly.

Does that make us mean buggers? I hope not, but if we do allow one then we need to allow them all, and in an effort to keep on top of things we remove the threads and mail the OP as a matter of routine. Everyone who is involved with a charity event feels strongly about it (quite rightly) and it's not our intention to cause unnecessary upset by deletion, but in the same breath we don't want lots of sponsor/ donation requests on the forums.

If anyone wants to start a thread that needs PH charitable support then you can always e mail me and we can discuss it.

Without wishing to sound heartless, where does it stop? I've got lots of links I could put up, all deserving of publicity and money, but I doubt they'd be appreciated.

And it's not simply a case of "If you dont' like it, then don't read it" ...If one link/sticky is acceptable, why not two, three, four?

As I said, I'm aware of the amount of deserving causes and of the requests you must get as a company. But this was for a maximum of 12 days, was a national story and only good could have come out of it for all involved. It didn't have to be a sticky, people could have made their own choice as to whether they could be arsed to read it or help.As I've said I have no connection with the family, but this a 2 year old girl who is dying, and PH are going to deny her some much needed publicity? How many requests do you think ITV get, and yet they saw fit to put the story out on NEWS AT TEN!!!, but it's not worthy of a quick post in the Lounge section of Pistonheads?
Seems completely blinkered to me.

Paul, Wasn't a request to the company,or for them to get involved, didn't need car rallies etc, just was a heads up to people to see if they kindly chuck in a quid or so. YHM

This probably sounds harsh but there are plenty of 2 year-olds dying all over the world. Just because this little girl is on the news doesn't make her case any more deserving, particularly as the treatment is experimental and the $500,000+ needed has no guarantees. The appeal website reckons the treatment has a 90% success rate, but the hospital's own website makes no claims for success at all.

No it doesn't sound harsh at all, and I've made it perfectly clear that I understand there are many deserving cases out there, some with lots of publicity, and the majority without. It just so happened this case came to light, and couldn't see any harm in giving a heads up.With respect, the hospital can't make any claims,I'd imagine in America they'd get their arse sued off.

Of course they could. That's the point of trials, to see how effective treatments are.

I haven't said anywhere she's more deserving, and of course there's no guarantees.Since when has there ever been any with bloody Cancer?
FWIW On the hospital website it states that 79% of patients achieve remission from neuroblastoma.Quite why I feel the need to point that out is beyond me.
I'll just pop back to the Lounge where I originally posted this and perv off on some link to a load of birds in knickers in a changing room.Sums it up.

True, but really worth deleting a thread over? Ironically it's probably got more exposure from this thread than it did from the original!

Makes me chuckle that there are threads on posting pictures of cats or performing character assassinations on users posting from dual fake profiles, or asking how to make a cup of soup, yet a simple heads up on something like that gets deleted...

I understand the "where do we draw the line?" POV, but think it is a rather sad state of affairs...

Wasnt the Sue Ryder cancer appeal started in general or somewhere?
That was a great appeal for help by her husband & it was very successful simply because of the coverage it was given on here. I am just saying if that was allowed why not this one?
