How do the top dogs moderate this site. I understand they have members who do some moderating for them, but is it someone's specific job at PH towers just to read every post possible? If so do they spend all day clicking on the links or is there a specific system to help them view every post? Would that be crap or a good job?

I think Garlick just sits with two windows open.

One for The Lounge and the other on the Classifieds..

There's a team of moderators, all of which are volunteers.

Then there's the Haymarket staffers who do a bit of moderating when they're not on yachts in the med.

I always imaganed the volunteer mods have their own sections to moderate to cut down on the mass reading. But this site is also fairly self moderating as well by the members and the report button when all else fails.

That's not true.

Since mobile broadband got going properly they do the bits of moderation from the yachts as well.

Have you not been issued with your pointy hat and nasal wart yet?

After 5 years you get a broom and a black cat too.

That seems unfair, considering that ordinary PHers of a certain post count/joining date earn a small sum just to keep things ticking over...

I realise all moderators are making their fortunes just by being on the site, but is there a global PH mod who spends all day on here for a salary making sure everything is good and there are no rebellions going on?

Nope.

PH has a staff which keeps the business running obviously but no one dedicated to the forums specifically.

Do people think it is right for the mods to be completely unpaid for their role in running what is now a commercial venture?

Yes it is right that they should be unpaid.

Because, whilst I would be surprised if there wasn't the odd drink or PH show ticket offered their way from time to time, that they don't have the reliance on income from the owners means they can walk if they want to, for whatever reason.

Ultimately though the final word rests with those who do draw a salary for the income it brings, or at least their boss and ultimately the BoD of Haymarket.

When all round here were fields it was PetrolTed's train set and he had the ultimate say. Now it's theirs.

I'm sure if the Mods didn't like the arrangement they would walk but unless they ever do I think it works well most of the time.

I agree, for slightly different reasons.

It's important that the mods are seen as part of the membership, not as employees.

Although there are no doubt those who have felt hard done by by the mods, there are many more who may not realize that mods have been an advocate for them.

The mods are PHers first and foremost. That's why they volunteer.

Even before Haymarket bought it, Ted still had revenue coming in from adverts. Obviously, I've no idea what proportion went to overheads as opposed to pocket, but still, it was technically "commercial". More to the point, if it wasn't showing a profit, I doubt the sale would have even been mooted in the first place.

But in regards to your specific point...I don't see why not. It's a voluntary position, after all. There's no formal commitment either way (as far as I know), so you're not beholden to anything. Thus nothing to stop any of the moderators saying "nah, not interested anymore".

Essentially, it comes down to, not what others feel is "right", but what the individuals concerned are happy to do.

I see the MOD's role as keeping things running smoothly, making sure that the site (and it's members) are not abused (too much) and ensuring that the forums do not become so much of a pain to Haymarket that they shut it down. That is why the MOD's are PH'ers, they have a vested interest in making sure the site keeps running smoothly.

We need to thank our lucky stars that Jim Holder (Autocar) aint a mod on here. There'd be no more than 4 contributors left.
