Differentiate internal and external links?

The functionality whereby links posted in threads open a separate window / tab (as your browser settings dictate) is very useful. Less useful, to me at least, is that links to other threads also open in a separate window.

I may be alone, but my PH forum experience tends to be "single threaded" - I know where my "back" button is, but I like to keep just one window / tab open for the forums.

I'm sure others' experience varies, but might it be worth consulting on opening internal (e.g. other thread) links in the same browser window?

Of course, one could do some natty Ajax to provide a pop-up decision box on each link clicked, but that's perhaps a little OTT. One could also make it a per-user setting, but how many would notice it?

So, anyhow, there we are. It would suit me for this to change. Would it suit anybody else?!

The reason that all links from a thread open in new tabs is because we work on the assumption that you will want to return to the thread after reading whatever is linked to. Clicking the close button to jump straight back to where you were before it quicker and easier than pressing back (potentially several times) and then scrolling to find your place.

If enough people want it changing though, we can look at building something.
