'Embedding' an excel file?

Hi Techie people

Is it possible to put an excel file on a forum? I have a table set up to show whos contracts I have back and whos paid etc and wondered if there was an easier way to display it rather than type out all the names with the double line breaker thingies.

There is no easy way to embed an excel file, but if you email it over to me I will convert it and post it.

Hi, sounds like I should stop being a lazy cow and do the table properly! As I will need to amend it as bits and pieces come in, thank you anyway though.

I didn't see the Lottery thread yesterday but did get a few emails from stragglers wanting to join so assume that's what it was about.

You can do it quicker if you save it as a csv file in excel and then open the csv file with notepad, it will get it all into a text based format so that all you have to do is add the || symbols, rather than copy and paste everything individually.

The way I do tables in Excel -> PH is as follows: (text in bold is to be typed in directly, including all quote marks etc)

1. Load the table into Excel. Let's say the table has 4 columns - A,B,C,D
2. In cell E1 type ="|"
3. In cell F1 type ="|="&A1&"=|"
4. Copy F1 to G1 , H1 and I1
5. Copy E1 to J1
6. In K1 type =E1&F1&G1&H1&I1&J1
7. Copy E1 to E2, copy J1 to J2, copy K1 to K2
8. In cell F2 type ="|"&B1&"|"
9. Copy F2 to G2, H2, I2
10. Now just copy the block E2 to K2 inclusive to each further row (E3, E4, etc)

Now you need to get it into PH. Select cells K1 to K20 (assuming 20 rows - the last row), right-click, copy. Now open a Notepad file and paste. Now copy all from Notepad and paste into PH. This last step should weed out any errant quotation marks.

For a wider or narrower table, just copy the cell code as many columns across as you like, but ensure that you have the start and end characters as (in this case) column E and J, and make sure you amend (what in this case is) column K to include all of the columns (so it might F,G,H,I,J,K,L for a 5-column table, for instance).

I know this is clunky, but once you've saved it then you can very quickly format up large tables into PH-speak. Enjoy!
