Search Function

Chaps,

I dont know how to phrase this without sounding like a moaning old scroat but bluntly, the search function is woeful. Even the advanced search, when it works, is not up to scratch. I've seached many things and IF you get some results, you have to scroll through pages of a thread to find the relevant post.

A page or two isnt too much of a chore, but when you get 100 pages to read through on one thread, you'd have to be mad to read them all.

Is anything being done to get this to be a more useful tool?

Other than that, I have to say I love this site so keep up the good work!

There are a couple of problems that we are aware of with the search, and hope to fix in the near future:

The search is affected by a bug at the moment which means you cannot search for words less than 4 characters long, which is probably why you aren't getting any results for some searches.

It is also limited in terms of how far back in time it will go, which means that if you want to find anything more than a few years old you will need to use the google search.

With regard to not going to the correct post, the solution is to click the + symbol on the left hand side. This will expand the search result to show the posts from that thread containing the words you are searching for. This will let you see if it is what you are looking for before you open the thread.

Thanks for the response.

The words were all longer than 4 char., but that plus button works a treat! I've not worked out if it returns multiple posts per thread if there are multiple posts (some threads are huge!).

The plus button does show all the posts containing the phrase, not just the first one.

Thanks again. I've just had a play with it, and thats a lot better than I though. Thanks very much for the pointers.
