PH profile "mates"?

Am I imagining it but did PH used to have a thing that listed who thought you were a jolly good egg and it was displayed below your username?
Was it a grading thing or just "six people like this person"?

Like a popularity contest, but on the internet.

It still has a "mates" functionality, but it doesn't do much any more, just tell you if they are online or not and give you a handy shortcut to their profile.

There used to be a reputation counter, but Ted binned that long ago as it was found to be counter-productive.

I think it's a good idea personally, so you can tell if the advice someone gave is usefull and whether you can trust the info provided.

Thing is, not everyone does meets so you will get all the people that are real life buddies artificially bumping there cred up.

I can imagine if someone had lots of cred, he'd act like a mod or something.

I've seen this on some other forums but I don't take much notice nor look at it much.

I'd rather have my own scathing opinion of a particular user

Where is the thread thumbs up button . I dont think you need a reputation counter as people can very quickly kill off any poor advice.

Would be ideal if there was a personal reputation counter so that you could score people privately and then you could know if you could trust their opinion on something or if they were a complete idiot.

TBH I thought it would have made PH even more cliquey than it already is.

Hmmm. Not sure about that one. If I posted "All ***** are idiots" then you would get pages and pages of nasty replies. Would that mean I am a good poster? No.

At one point in time we had levels based on the number of posts made, much the same as you'll find on any of the off the shelf forums.

Until that is an American got a bit too big for his boots and complained over the use of the term 'Gas Bag'

The irony wasn't overly strong in him, it has to be said.

If people are quoting you then you've still influenced them in some way. As said, it's a proxy for 'authority'.

I use the mates function on here for either:

a) People that i know in real life

or

b) People who I play on Battlefield on the PS3 with

We have a respect facility on my little forum which did encourage people to post useful, constructive, and usually technical advice, which was good in the short term but I don’t think it is worth it in the long term. People got bored of it and also there seem to be a obvious difference in the male and females amount of 'respects'.
