Mods: Please provide reasons for thread closures

I've noticed a couple of threads being closed recently, some I can clearly understand why (Mumsnet invasions) and others where it seems the mod in question is being a little over-zealous?
I've had a thread closed myself and I couldn't understand what rules (if any) I'd broken with the thread so I politely emailed the mod in question to ask them why... No reply.
Ok, I accept that these people aren't getting paid for it and therefore I have no reason to expect a reply so I have a suggestion. Instead of simply closing a thread can we have a reason?
If it breaks a rule then refer to the rule so people learn. If it's just run it's course then say so.
The mods word is final, of course, but we'll never learn unless you explain why.
