Any chance of getting some Youtube embedding going. The PH forum software seems to be capable of doing it as seen in your RE : threads (see the stratos one for example).

Any chance of doing the same in the forum. There's lots of pissed off folks in the Youtube thread because folks - A: can only provide a link and B: are too lazy to post a description.

Every other bit of forum software I've used has this capability to embed a Youtube video.

It would allow folks to see what the videos about and save repost being posted probably twice a page.

I disagree. It could mean that people have what could potentially be inappropriate embedded thumbnails appearing in the browser window. At present it's just a link, but if people could learn to put some kind of bloody description in, that would be very useful. ESPECIALLY if it's in any way NSFW.

My suggestion was to ban people from the thread if they didn't put a descroption, I don't think it was hugely populart

I've always tried to understand peoples need to have NSFW on posts. Wish I could get a job I could surf PH on or somewhere NSFW is likely to appear. I'm sure embedded thumbnails will give you a good idea of what the video is about prior to clicking. If people are having a hard job remembering to post descriptions - I would think posting a NSFW is even further down on their priority list.

A NSFW tag is a courtesy to those who're allowed to use work machines for surfing. That could be someone on their PC in the office at lunchtime, or it could be someone using a work laptop in the evening. The issue with loading up thumbnails is that it's stored in the history on the machine, and may not be appropriate for work. It would mean users who use PH at work could have inappropriate images loading up on their computers and being stored. At least at present, nothing is loaded.

A lot will also depend on your work's IT usage policy, but suffice to say there's stuff on Youtube that could get some people in hot water. Corporates tend to be very rigid with what they do and don't allow, and will punish accordingly.

Yup - mines plays safe and shuts Youtube down (no business need).

As far as PH is at the moment it's clicker beware.

NSFW isn't literal. It also means if you're browsing with company it might not be appropriate.
PH works on the basis of community and care for the quality of that community. The reason youtube isn't embedded is the same reasion avatars/signatures/titles aren't used.
It keeps it simple, attractive and work friendly.

The day people start thinking NSFW is acceptable on here is the day PH goes down the pan, it's one of the very few websites that isn't on a broad netnanny list that KOs it for everyone.

Silent1 makes a good point, and one we would heavily consider before technically implementing videos into the forums.

Most of our decisions are based around

1. Does it keep the design clear and simple?
2. Will it affect any company block lists, or other internet block lists?
3. Is it useful for the community?
4. Is it technically possible?

I will admit that embedding youtube videos is not very high up our priority lists at the moment, so isn't something that will happen soon.
