Ban protocol

When a member is banned - whether a temporary exclusion from a particular room on the forum or forum-wide or, even, permananently, do you actually make a point of telling that person what has happened and the duration of their punishment?

Or is it just a surpise when, one day, they can log back into an area(s)?

Only reason I ask is that a long-standing member who shall remain nameless ( CW7 )tells me that he has received no communication as to how long he will be persona non grata (for the avoidance of doubt, he hasn't grumbled at all about the fairness of being punished)

Can someone omnipotent get in touch with him?

relatively new round here, still learning the names a bit having come from a bikers site with absolutely NO moderation so this sort of thing is a little worrying. being very careful not to deploy full-fat humour yet but it does seem a sensibly modded place so far.

When a person is banned, they receive a communication as to why. And I made sure it was explained why.

In this particular case, I'll make it very clear that it was not based on the single instance yesterday. There were many other historical factors involved. So don't assume that posting 1 pic results in an immediate ban - although, in some instances it would.

And to close - said poster also posted that he expected to get banned. So it should not have been a suprise.
